not a fan of all that red crap so will be the first thing to go..

Don't walk, run away. That monster tach usually doesn't mean good things, especially since the Protege's have them already. Also, that sound pretty pricey for those amount of miles, but maybe its just me.

^^ thanks! I have been looking for a good bit of time to find some protege5s and its been pretty tough to find a decent one.. I had a feeling that the unnecessary tach was a bad sign but i figured I'd ask..

Thanks.. i will post the interior pictures of the car if he ever sends them.. just for the pleasure of doing so..

i just bought a 03, with way less miles for 4250. find a better one that a nice lady drove since she bought it new like i did :D

i would try to find one that is as close to stock as possible. with that many miles and those mods, no thanks. i would keep looking.

Hank! Thank you!!!!! I'm test driving the Houston one this weekend!!

The white one? If you're driving all that way, might as well line up some others to test drive too. The white one is missing a lug nut BTW.

Have fun and keep us posted :)

In general, if a car has been modified, I want it to look incredibly clean. Modified and trashy ALWAYS equals a car that wasn't taken care of. Money that should have gone into maintenance went into cheap mods.

^^^ agreed!!

What should I look for to be functioning properly ? Meaning, what is the most common issue p5s have? Maximas for example, have problems with tranny slippage..

And yeah I noticed the lug nut.. Lol

Lumpy/erratic idle. Get the engine good and hot and then let it idle, if the tach doesn't bounce around much you're golden :)

If it is erratic if could be any number of things (cracked air intake tube, EGR valve, coil packs). Luckily all of those things are pretty cheap to fix but you can use it to knock a couple hundred dollars off the asking price.

when you talk erratic, do you mean 200RPMS jumps or less? the car is at a very low price. but he has never replaced the clutch.. do clutches go out easy on p5s? I want to see what all i need to spend..

You'll know it when you see it, P5s idle at 700RPM, if something's wrong you'll notice that it'll sometimes dip down to 400-500 then shoot back up to 700. Revving the engine to 3-4K RPM and then quickly letting off the throttle seems to aggravate the problem.

The clutch should last a very long time if it wasn't abused (easily over 200K KM) but the only way to know for sure is to try the car. Make sure the engine is good and cold when you go for the test drive, it's the only way to tell if the clutch chatters, once it's warmed up it won't do it (unless it's in really bad shape).

Also, you should watch the shifter, if it moves around a lot or if shifting is randomly difficult it could be that a motor mount (or two) is ripped and needs to be replaced.

thank you for the tips! I have had several manual tranny cars but the past 2 have been auto so I will need to drive my brothers car there to get a feel of the clutch engaging thing..

I will keep you guys posted as soon as I test drive it..

The chatter is another thing that you'll feel right away (the whole car will shake), but the engine needs to be cold or you'll never notice it. If it does chatter it'll need a new clutch and flywheel (~$200 DIY, $700-$1000 at a shop).

Another thing! Check if the timing belt and water pump have been changed (they should have been done at 105K mi).

I get clutch chatter every so often on mine. I thought it was pretty normal for the P5s. I know when I had my WRX it was normal.

It's not normal, it means you have hot-spots on your pressure plate or flywheel (caused by overheating). Granted, there's nothing wrong with a little chatter but on cold mornings it can be quite annoying.

What if the timing belt and water pump have not been changed yet? is 105k the time that they must be replaced?
