Shims are sitting in them. There are two types of lifters, solid ones and hydrolic. Solid one is basically a chunk of metal sitting on the push rod, the old style used for a while on most domestic cars. Hydrolic one is being lubricated by oil (oil goes through it) So if the oil gets clogged up in there, lifter will make that clunking noise. I gotta check the damn air filter on the CAI. I think it might of sucked that rock up and thats what happened.

pushrod engines - the cam lifts the push rod which in turn lifts the rocker on one side and pushes down the rocker on the other side and that is what lifts the valve. so much weight to move no wonder pushrod engines SUCK

and we have a solid setup. solid basically means that the cam lifts the valve directly. hyrdalic lifters have something between the cam and the valve to lift the valve. there are actually 3 types of ways to lift the valve (i think there are 3), but i cant remember the other

you should know better than me, hehe. I will take a picture of that darn rock that fell out of my exhaust and show you. I still have it in my cup holder.
 
Glad to hear its not a valve. May I make a suggestion? Don't go off on a tizzy about boost until you have your motor fully inspected. These kinds of problems turn into major ones when added stress is brought into the equation. It's kind of like saying "I just got out of my cast after breaking my leg, I want to go on a fun run..11k good for everyone?"

Seriously. Have someone inspect your motor and give you the OK to add forced induction.
 
arh just overhaul it before boost. that way you'll be safe.

but i'm still so curious about that rock! that is so so so strange
 
Spicy, you are absolutely correct. I do agree with you on your suggestion. Turbo is not gonna be in for another 2-3 months if that! I dont have garage, now its raining, and tomorrow it will be nice weather. I will inspect the air filter on my CAI. Since we have solid lifters, I doubt it had anything to do with that. Although, I still say SOMEHOW that piece of rock was sucked up from the outside. For example, you have a small rock in front of your mouth, your mouth is open and you are trying to enhale as hard as you can. You let the rock to fall in your throat, and suddenly you choke on it. Well that kind of choke I have experienced in my car right at that moment when car almost stalled (choked on me) and started clunking. Weird but possible.

If u sucked a rock into your car you would have more than a clunk. It would rip the s*** out of your engine and most likely be destroyed in the process. It sounds more like some scorched piece of metal came off something important. Or maybe when u installed it a rock got in??? if that is even possible.

Turbo wise, honestly, considering how much stress turbos put on these engines you would most likely have to go forged at the same time, especially if u have alot of hard miles on the engine. Keep that in mind.
 
Yea, what he said, a rock sucked in wouldn't survive to get spit out of the exhaust, it would be embedded into a piston or smashed up into a million bits or stuck onto a valve... etc etc and would do quite a bit of damage on its journey. I second the opinion that it's a part of your engine.

J spec cam doesn't require valve clearance adjustment. Few years ago, when Protege scene just started someone checked it after installing J-Spec cam-it was within norm. I have my cam in for about 2.5 years/30000 km with no problems and I autocrossed and took car to the track many times.
As for rock in the engine-it is a mystery...

nope. Ever since I picked my car up from the dealer, its not clunking. I have no idea wtf did they do (guy told me they didnt do anything) but there's no clunk at all. Ill check the air filter today for any holes.

obender66: yea thats what Ive been told. Jspec camshaft is only longer duration, same lift.

******* s*** pisses me off, cant figure out where did that rock come from.
