Well, i'll say one thing and that is....Im glad mazda has kicked it up a notch..even if it is an option its exactly that..an option
when I purchased my protege 5 everyone was asking me how much it hurt me in the pocket with the options and i was what options? roof rack, pw,pl,cd player all was standard along with alot of other things....so im happy to see that mazda has kept the good works coming...
I would pay for the 1500 option..working or living in the city is hard with all those unexpected detours..or even planning a road trip...it would get some use since the wife isnt to good of a navigator :D

I got the NAV and had a mixed bag of feelings about it. Yeah it's a luxury but it has been useful too. I got the car for my wife and she isn't good with directions or a map. This thing has done a world of service for her while she is out on job interviews. It proved very useful tonight also when I had to leave for downtown in a hurry to drop a UPS package. I had to be there by 8:00 and didn't have time to look up directions on a computer. Maps also don't give you detailed enough locations when looking for a specific street number. It took me right to the front door. A little expensive but worth it. It should help with resale in the future.

just because you don't think its nessicary doesnt' mean everyone should think its unnessicary. for some people like me. i drive 30-40,000 miles a year from trips out of state to jobsites for my work, and having navigation would make things allot easier, just because you choose to not buy the option doesnt mean it is worthless to everyone, use some sence. only downfall is the cost, haven't priced dvd navigation lately but generally you were looking at 1000$ for a good flip up screen headunit and another 1000$ for a navigation unit, so for the same price as the stock unit you could have the same thing well actually i'd bet the aftermarket nav was a bit better, plus an upgraded audio unit. only thing the stock nav has going for it, is the stealth install.

You would think that but installation was bit hefty and not everyone wants a flip-up screen parked in there dash screaming "steal me" not to mention installation. It was almost $2200 for my moms Explorer plus we would lose the steering wheel mounted controls(glad we didn't buy that). This price was actually coming from a good friens of the family, seems like $1500 isn't all that much.

yeah but there is always other options, you could always order the pod and stick your own screen in there and have the same style setup as the stock one, keep the dvd nav in the glove box like the stock one and save allot of money. and i always consider the fact that i'd do the work myself anyway. but the point is. even if it is the exact same price as factory. the aftermarket unit generally will be way better.

as far as steeringwheel mounted controls there are companies out there that make adapters so u can keep those controls as well.

okay, this thread answered my question.... the navigation system can not play real dvd's like the one in the 350z... aiight... so base model mazda3 here i come...

but will an aftermarket system have the ability to track your position despite the loss of GPS signal? the factory one uses the speed and steering sensors in the car to do this.
