My turn...LSD took a big crap.

No I don't know what F'm M is when related to diff's...If you couldn't tell I am after a techincal responce. I guess I'm on the wrong forum.

your damn right.

Seriously though, the revised unit no longer uses spring force for the lsd function. It now uses a clutch disk on either side of the drive and driven spider gears. They took away the spring force to weaken the lsd ability, which in turn, makes the whole assembly stronger.

The best term I have come to use is it uses heat and centrifugal force to apply the clutches.

hehehe

Yeah i have seen a break down of some clutch lsd's and it's quite an interesting design. F'n M, I'm thinking friction & ???. Nevermind.

I guess it works with trapping the oil and using it's viscosity to grip...who knows.

Here's some pics of a Nissan RWD LSD - http://members.westnet.com.au/web/phatr32/diff.htm

So opinions here (from what I've found) are that the clutch lsd is a waste of time. All I've got to do is find out what size the MX6 axel inputs are...looking at the Aus made Guru diff as a replacement. Not badly priced either (roughly same in AUD as for the quaife in USD).

A little update

The Spec Stage II clutch doesn't grip after 2k miles on it. I can also hear a vibration, but can't feel anything. I'm going to probably take everything apart myself for an investigation soon.

Did you get the one for the MSP or the NA Protege? Spec has two different Stage 2 clutches. Good luck solving your problem.

That would be the one for the NA Protege, which does fit our MSP's according to MAM. Its less expensive than the SZ 332. There is only a 21 ft lb of torque holding difference between the two according to the SPEC website.

Thats odd...i know One of Nick customers at Modern performance is still running his stock clutch and drives daily with around 300ftlb tourqu and about 285whp, at 15psi, and it doesnt slip...i am also running the stock clutch for about 1500miles (about 9000miles total)at 10-15 psi, and not slippage grabs like it did when i bought the car.

Well mine doesn't seem to want to hold 200wtq

Fidanza flywheel? fidanza + clutch = no grip...

I ran over 200 horse with a stock MSP LSD For a short while before my motor went up... and it was all good.. I'll be running nearly 400 on it in a few weeks... mine is welded.. nice dime stacks... I can get that done for anyone too...

just currious what does welding it do? doesnt that kind of defeat its purpose?

No.. you don't weld the internals... externally the LSD is composed of the ring gear, upper shell and lower shell... the "failures" everyone gets is the upper shell seperating from the lower shell. This can be strengthened by welding the ring gear to the lower shell... since the ring gear is riveted quite solidly through the upper shell, welding it to the lower shell reinforces the join of the 3 parts and prevents shearing.

Yeah the stock clutch was holding ok. The new spec on the other hand doesn't want to cooperate

Is there a way to tell if your LSD is about to go bad or will it just happen out of the blue?
