My Dream: Beating a Mustang GT

I love mustangs, I've owned about 8 so far, everything from a 88' Saleen to a 93' Cobra. I've owned convertibles and coupes - loved every one. I have to agree with Joe on the fact that beating a mustang in a MSP is very attainable. Yesterday I raced a 99' GT (5-speed) with a K&N and Flowmaster Cat-back Sys. We raced from a 3rd gear roll and we were bumper to bumper all through 3rd and 4th gear. Then again from a 1st gear roll and after 3rd gear had only pulled me by a fender (my front bumper was at his door). My MSP is completely stock and unflashed. The guy asked me to pull over at a gas station. He was suprised but knew about the MSP. All of my mustangs ran NA in the 13's with the exception of my 88' coupe, it ran mid 12's but had heads, cam, intake and whole lot of stuff. It basically comes down to the driver and how well he/she knows their car. I've watched a friend repeatedly run 15's in his coupe and letting me drive resulted in a 13.90. Case and point, my sister has an 03' GT and I pull her easily. Just for the info my friend has a 99' Convert. Cobra and consistently runs 13.80's with a X-pipe and K&N.

This is one of the most realistic replies I have seen on this board :).. The cars I would stress over though are the LS1 F bodies and vettes :).

Thanks for all the input everybody! I think my dream is no longer a merely a dream, but a POSSIBILITY! :) Anyways, do any of you know what a GT runs in the quarter?

What is can anwhat is it will are two different things. I was out at the local "show" last night and there was a guy there with a 2000 GT with a supercharger, exhaust and intake. He said his best run was 14.1@103. I am thinking there are a couple on this board that would give him a run for his money and thats a seriously modded GT

I wouldn't call that a seriously modded GT, but a poorly tuned f&cked up one to be that cslow with a blower :).. I know a guy with gears, exhaust and air intake running 14.3 in his. I saw a guy in a stock convertible run like a 15.6-15.7 or something pathetic like that. Pretty weak though in my opinion and easy prey. When I got mine, I had plans on putting a turbo on it, but I don't know now- I may just keep it as a cruiser since it at least looks good and the drop top is cool.

See- doesn't take much :).. Now, if it were built right, that would be another story- while there are a LOT of mustang enthusiasts out there and a lot of seriously fast ones, most of them think gears and exhaust make it a race car..

mustang GTs have to be one of the most satisfying kills, especially if they have exhaust on their s*** louder than conceivable with an import... everyone turns to look only to see the turkey slaying msp pull on him. =)

The only good thing is it seems to me it's alot easier to spot a hardcore Camaro/Firebird Than a Stang. Seems like Mustangs are always a mixed bag. I have pulled up to GTs that have Cobra Hoods and Rims and tons of mods but no go fast goodies. Then seen complete sleepers that look stock and run mid 13's. An F-body you know right away what you are dealing with. They don't seem to strap on all the BS looks parts. I guess if I had an LS1 and could just throw on a TB and exhaust and start raping people I wouldn't spend much money either :D

i definetly know its all about what they got, and how they drive...ive got two friends with mustang gts....i only raced one, on the freeway 3rd gear roll on...bo0sting only 4psi in my p5...and i walked away..i must say though that i did downshift first and he has an auto...i believe it was stock at the time...then there's my other friend who has done some stuff to his car and hits low 14's..maybe at 13's now....with my standalone and more bo0st..i will be eating these guys alive!
hahaha

wtf???

a dream to beat a mid 14 second boat that has the handles of a motorhome...with bad build quality like the Mustang GT??? :)

All I can say is have bigger dreams...;)

My dreams are more along the lines of picking up a ferrari from the maranello factory and driving through the countryside. and enjoying the impeccable handling!!! Oooops.. I already have a car that handles like that!!!!!!!!! ahahahahaha :p :)
(ill still take the Fe3rrari tho!!!!)

Hey Guys..I ran the newer version of the Stang..believe it was an 02...i am at 6psi...And i beat one..but not by much..about 1cl.

The guy was definetly pissed off though...and that was from a 2nd gear roll!

Just turn up the boost to 9psi..Get a nice 3" exhuast...and you should be able to beat a couple of stangs unless they have some mods...

Mustang cobra's are supper fast..and i don't see any Mazda speeds beating one any time soon!

Rustangs are a pretty easy kill if they are close to stock.

Go try to race ls1's heh. Stupid GM's and they're quickness.

Actually w/ a 50shot of Nitrous..You shouldn't have any problems..At least i didn't!

i agree with some of the guys here. most mustang owners simply don't know how to drive 'em. they will spin like crazy, and some folks like that idea. they think that shows they have power.
and it does, i guess.

as a mustang and MSP owner, i can say that no matter how many mods i throw at my MSP, IT WOULD NEVER , EVER, whip my mustang.

there are some stangs out there that can be had, but beware, there are some true import killers lurkin' out there somewhere.

First off, good luck to the original poster of this thread, I think your goal is very attainable, and you should be well below the amount you have budgeted for this project...

Also, 2 weeks ago, a good friend of mine bought a brand new Mach 1 Mustang, and I got an opportunity to drive it. I've never really been a mustang guy... I've raced a few fairly quick ones (high 12's) at the track when I had my T-type, but never really driven any "quick" stock ones... Well, the mach 1 was quick... whew. I don't know the stats or anything, but damn, I would think it should be in the 13's easily... Wheelspin was easy to control, good shifter, gobs of freakin' torque... :-) Weird ass old school shaker hood, and the interior was kind of blah, but other than that... :thumbs up:

Anyways, if anyone else has driven one of those maybe they can back me up, it was a pretty impressive offering from ford. (Especially being that I am an old LT1/LS1/GM guy. ;) )

how much did ur friend get his mach1 for?? around here they were only getting a few and were gonna auction them off, which i assume means they went for quite a bit

Whew good luck

Coming from work at Steeda (and as a former Mustang owner) and being a Mazda owner I would have to say that it will take a lot of $ and great driving to beat a Mustang GT. The '99+ GT's will run high 13's@ 100+ with cat-back, CAI, pulleys, and decent tires. Not to say that it couldn't be done, in fact I would love to see it!
