MSP sucks at autoX

Autox MSP

I drive a caution cone
Took my car to a autox for the first time yesterday. Handling on the car was awesome, very grippy and easily controlled. But what made it so bad was the powerband of the car.
The car has been flashed but the power is very erratic, in some corners it would hesitate and some times it would bog then go full power ahead. I had another person drive my car who got the 2nd best time of the day on his rx7. He commented the same thing the power is just too unpredictable in this car.
I've autocrossed my turbo civic a few times and i know its not the boost lag thats causing the msp to be unpredicable.
The car almost feels like it changes fuel/timing maps in each turn.
It really hurts the car because the handling has such good potental but really bad engine management.

huh.. weird.. the first time I went I won my class. loved the handling. powerband was fine, just left it in second gear.

Is this the first time you've autocrossed it? How many times did your friend drive your MSP before the day of the autocross?

Before making a blanket statement like 'MSP sux' consider that the driver may suck. Nothing personal but, get some experience before stating something so wrong.

The MSP is great in autocross. I had a tough time figuring out how to make it work for me the first time too. However, it worked in the end.

its not the driver. the car sucks. power is erratic. Its hard to drive because power is unpredicable.
I've driven many turbo cars and this car has the far worst fuel management system. my civic with the hondata was far better at fuel economy and power delievery and it had a bigger turbo on a smaller motor.

I'm not bashing the handling of the mazdaspeed because its excellent but callaway turbo system sucks at autox racing.

I find it hard to beleive that the entire problem is due to the fuel mapping. I think you need to look into your car a little bit more, and drive it a few more times before you make a statement like that.

Anyone else autox'd a flashed msp? I'm "hesitant" to get the flash now, because I want to autox my car.

I think it depends on what kind of mods you want to do to the car. I got mine flashed because I do not plan on hih boost levels. My $.02

my car likes to drive nice when it feels like it and sometimes it hesitates, and many people have the same experience. If you guys like the way the power delievery of this car you guys have not driven enough good cars. WRX and evo and some of the best examples of turbo power delievery, smooth and predicable.

Well than get rid of your MSP and get another car. Quit ******* bitching.

I was very fast in AUTO-X in my MSP. It was unflashed, running stock boost with a custom exhaust. I had one of the fastest times on the track. Nothing like watching a FWD car make the rear slide! I agree with the others, get a little more seat time and get a feel for the power of the car. 2nd gear in this car absolutley rocks. Very easy to make fast times with only one gear!

What mods do you have???
I haven't autocrossed my car yet, but we couldn't compare...got lots of mods.
The reason I ask about the mods you may have is it could be something with that....don't know 100%.
At what RPM's was it really erractic...I also know you might not be 100% sure about that because you were trying to get through the course as fast as possible.
Is your car really flashed?? I bring this up due to other who say that got it then got it again....
I guess that we all need a lot more info.

I agree...I don't think it's fair to say that seeing as it's your 1st auto-x in the MSP. It's actually supposed to be one of the best auto-x cars around until you get into RWD imports. I went to the track & had a hard time launching because I kept getting wheel hop, but you don't see me saying the MSP sucks at 1320.

DooD, It cracks me up that your having this issue. I truly believe it is the drive, and not the car. A good autoxer will rev match, know the pivot points of his car, learn the track, and attack it with all his skill and knowledge.

Take a few more tries in the seat before you go bashing the power of the msp. IT is built specifically for autox racing, and has owned the evo and sti at many o events. :D/members/boostisgood/ownedstrippedcar.jpg

No problems with power here. I'm not running stock, but I do have the flash and power in the 4-5k range is much improved and smooth as silk.

The only reason I can see for someone to have problems with an otherwise stock flashed MSP is if they're dipping into the lower RPMs (<3000) coming out of a tight corner...in which case you will be better served by a timely heel-toe at the corner entry.

Peace...(hippy)

all of you guys are always quick to defend the car. I've owned the car for 2k miles so far. I'm really trying to love it, but its got serious issues.
I wish i was rich so i could just get rid of this car but i have to keep it longer since the resale vaule totally sucks on this car.

BTW i know i can out drive 99% of the people on this forum.
