I paid for my vehicle, my insurance, and everything else when I was 16-18. I was a terrible driver. I would do crazy things because driving slow and safe was booring to me. Luckily, I went over to Japan for three years to let my driving record heal up and came back more mature. The majority of young drivers are not good drivers.

i'd like to see the stats for modified vs turbo vs SUV crash rates in regard to teens... obviously teenagers have a higher percentage of accidents (that goes almost without saying) but there is more that goes into it, i'd like to see the statistics of FATAL accidents in regard to age, because older people are less likely to get into the small fender benders that happen do to lack of experience behind the wheel, of which teenagers are notorious for, which would also sky rocket their statistics for accidents over-all...

please dont generalize all young people because you believe that only a handful of them are fit to drive a modified car, i have owned a few cars that i modified and have been in ZERO accidents with any of them, i paid for all of them (including my MSP, still paying for actually), and have paid for the insurance on all of them, i have MANY friends who have done the same, just because you know a couple privileged individuals who get everything handed to them does NOT mean you should put a label on every teen you see, many of us are very hard working individuals who earn almost everything we have, personally i've been working since i was 13, even longer if you count mowing yards, which has afforded me the luxury of buying things that i want... and on the other hand, i have friends who did have everything handed to them, and they are also very responsible people regardless of how much they had to work for their posessions...

Young people also dont always READ whole posts either. lol I never said ALL teens. And when you work where I WORK and you SEE actual accident reports, then you'd know what I was talking about. Again, insurance rates for teens are high for a REASON. And also remember, we were ALL teenagers once.

But without further delay, here's just ONE article, but the list goes on (doesnt anyone ever get these statistics in Drivers Ed anymore?):

Baby boomer children are now driving age, which means large numbers of teens are old enough to drive. Experts say death and accident rates among teens are expected to rise.

A teen driving statistical pattern that continued unchanged was male teen drivers in more automobile accidents than females.

Though female teen driver death rates in automobiles were lower than male teen drivers, the fatality rate among female teen drivers in automobiles continued to be higher than older females.

Teen driving statistics on teenage males, and females, confirm 16 and 17 year olds to be high risk drivers.

The time-of-day teenage drivers drove automobiles was also noteworthy. Teen drivers' accident and fatality rates in automobiles increased after 10 p.m. as well as after 6 a.m. Percent of accidents in both time slots were almost identical.

Finally, teenagers' automobile accident and death rates on weekends were higher than older drivers. Many reasons contributed to teen drivers' high accident and fatality rates in automobiles. Immaturity, lack of experience, and peer pressure were a few.

Statistics you should know...
  • 14% of all deaths due to motor vehicle accidents are teen drivers.
  • Most teen driver deaths due to motor vehicle accidents occur on weekends 53% of the time.
  • Teen drivers killed in motor vehicle accidents had a youth passenger in automobile 45% of the time. More facts below.
  • Of teen drivers fatally injured in automobiles, more than 1/3 were speed related accidents.
  • Teen lifestyle of staying up late make teen drivers a high risk to have an automobile accident due to drowsiness.
  • More than any age group, teens are likely to be involved in a single vehicle crash.
  • On the basis of current population trends, there will be 23% more 16-20- year-old drivers on the road in 2010 than there are today -- 26.1 million.
  • This age group makes up 7% of licensed drivers, but suffers 14% of fatalities and 20% of all reported accidents.
  • The 16-year-old population alone will increase from 3.5 million to over 4 million by 2010.

blah, i meant to say most, and i beleive i did at first but i went back and re-wrote my second paragraph so thats probably where i slipped up... all i wanted was the statistics, not calling you a liar, but i have plenty of people feed me bulls*** all day long and i get sick of them making blanket statements without any true merit, when i ask "why", or "how", i am always greeted with "because", instead of them actually knowing wtf they are talking about, just a little insight into my skepticism... if you dont mind me asking where'd you get all those stats? i did about 20 minutes of searching (not nearly enough to find anything) and came accross very little, especially in regard to national statistics...

i still stand by myself being an exceptional driver, i went through my "fast" phase like everyone else but i was also a lot more careful during that phase than anyone i've ever met, currently (and within the past couple years) i can be seen consistantly doing 1-2mph under the posted limit :), and i have many friends that are the same, so i hate being lumped into the general idea of teenage driver/car owner, even tho i'm really not a teen anymore :p...

I think I can shed some first hand experiance on this subject.

4 kids between the ages of 16 & 24

3 drive, the two males (24 & 17) have both wrecked 5 cars in the last 3 years.
The 17 year old took out two of my favorite cars in just the last 13 months. Both had been paid off and were free and clear. The 24 yr old totaled three cars over two years
again the one car that was mine was paid off.

The key here is, don't let your kids drive anything that you hold the title to!
Always trust the lone female to take care of your stuff!

My 43 seems SO old reading these posts, but I did buy the MSP when I was only 41. Either way, sometimes I still act 21. Most times, actually.

One thing to add, from an old guy's perspective: You're the SAME PERSON at 43 as you were at 21. As such, give the 43-year-old "you" a gift from the 21-year-old "you": Live, save some dough, and have great life experiences.

(...sighs, realizing that the math shows a great percentage of MSP owners less than half my age...)

What's the deal with "SATISTICS I SHOULD KNOW"... why exactly should I know them? Is ther going to be a quiz?

sounds like your kids dont deserve to drive, that many accidents is unacceptable, especially since so many of them resulted in a totalled car, maybe you should have taken their cars/licenses away? personally i think the state should have done it, but thats a law that will never get passed :(... i have been in 2 accidents, NEITHER were my fault in the least and were caused by other idiots on the road, i just hate being lumped into the generalization that stupid teenager drivers have created :(...

22, I got into a major accident 19, i had a base RSX, it wa smy frist stick shift car, i used to go crazy with it, i crashed at 120mph and rolled over couple times and was in ICU for 2 and half days.

i'm 18. a responsible 18, meaning when i go out to illegal street races i just watch... i take 99% of my races to the track.
