MS3 or 3 w/HIBOOST Kit!!!

for some of us there is no choice, if you want a sedan and not that ugly hatch then you have to go with the HiBoost Kit and the regular sedan.

you sluts are in rude awakening if you think that bolting on a turbokit is gonan make your car fast. Expect the car to break down every other week, smell like gas, blow misc seals.

problem is that the MS3 isn't gonna have an automatic - or is it?

if so, the choice is clear - get the MS3, and don't order the body pieces - leave it looking like a base 2.3
FTW

it's all about being a sleeper (upyours)

my current 3 + hiboost kit + ms3 suspension bits = you dunno what hits ya!

MS3.

Reason

1. Residual value. You spend money to put the turbo on the 3, no matter how you do it u'll lose money when it comes to selling time (whether you part it out or leave it in). The Mazdaspeed 3 has the value built in. Just think of it this way. CWill's car may get as much as a Mazdaspeed protege but he put a lot more time and money into it. If he parts with the kit, the money/time he spent installing the stuff is lost.

2. Warrenty, not that u really care but its nice to not have to shell out money after getting the car.

3. MS3 is built for boost. Where as the 3 + hi boost is not engineered from the beginning to handle boost. So things can go wrong in the long run.

Another thing to keep in mind is insurance. The Mazdaspeed3 will be covered properly under insurance, but that insurance will be more expensive than an ordinary Mazda3 5-door. If you HiBoost your 3, you can get around paying more for insurance, but then, if something happens, not only will you lose all the extra stuff on your car (not covered by insurance), but it's also possible that, if the car is not totalled, you may get denied for continued coverage, as just about all insurance policies will not cover vehicles with performance modifications.

If I were buying a new car when the Mazdaspeed3 is out, I would likely buy the Mazdaspeed3. However, having the Mazda3 4-door already (which, like others, I find much more attractive than the 5-door), I'm all for HiBoosting it. With modifications, my 3 will end up being significantly better than the Mazdaspeed3 in all areas except probably one: the 6-speed tranny. However, I have a taller fifth gear sitting here on the floor wating for installation that will help with that complaint (but still probably not be as good as a 6-speed). My Quaife will likely be better than the LSD that will be in the Mazdaspeed3 (just a guess--I obviously don't know that for sure). And the suspension setup I'm going with will also probably be better than the OEM stuff on the Mazdaspeed3.

And the comment about constant problems with a boosted car is off-base. It IS definitely true that the more you monkey with your car, the more troubles you will have. However, to make it sound like you're going to be in constant trouble if you get the HiBoost kit is VERY pessimistic, I think. I had an aggressively supercharged Focus (13 psi max with NO proper intercooler), and it ran 80,000 miles with few problems, and no serious ones) before I sold it.

if you want all out power a normal mazda3 with a built engine and the Hiboost would be the way to go.
Once you max out the fuel system of the MS3 you are pretty much done unless you can find someone that knows how to tune a Direct injection engine (like bullydog or banks).

You beat me to it! This is what I was going to mention.

Thanks for everyones opinions I havent truly made up my mind yet but I am leaning towards the MZ3 w/hiboost but I will have too see.

Turbo a base 3 or go with MS3

I would go with a MS3 for the following reasons:
1.)6speed manual close ratio transmission- Generally with a well geared 6speed, your overall accelleration is faster.
2.) Limited Slip Differential - the only aftermarket LSD on the market RIGHT now is $1500. U.S. Believe me life will be about 10 times better when you are launching a FWD 250+horse car when it has this, as well as aggressive manuevers if you competed in Time Attack or autocross events.
3.)AFAIK, this is the EXACT same motor as in the MS6, which makes 274hp. I'm thinking that the Mazda engineers either went with a completely different fuel map or with conservative timing/fuel.(Of course this is speculation on my part)
4.) 150mph top speed (electronically governed, vs the 118 or so on the others)
5.)the MS3 overall is wider, comes standard with abs and larger brakes( another thing you won't have to upgrade completely, besides pads and rotors).
6.) the "body kit" is actually what I like to call an aero-kit as it has a function in keeping the MS3 stable at performance levels.

The advantages you have with a baseline 3 is that you could get a '05 or a used one for dirt cheap and put your money into the car over a period of time like previous posters have stated. An aftermarket turbo system will always make more power than a factory tuned motor.

Personally, I'm upgrading my '04 atx 3 to the mazdaspeed 3.
I'll be upgrading to a FMIC, Tein, Swift, or Tanabe coiloversystem, and of course wheels and tires MWHAHAHAHA

3.) DISI coilpacks - while the previous poster is correct in the fact that it will be harder to tune the MS3 in the first year or so, this option is what will make this a powerhouse system because it delivers a VERY smooth torque/horsepower curve, plus one less part of your ignition system to upgrade. DISI, is not a new technology however. The Nissan motors use this system to GREAT effect. SR20det, rb20det, rb25det, rb26dett(GODZILLA MOTOR!), etc.

Its direct injection, not direct ignition. Two totaly different systems. None of the engines you listed use direct injection. The only enigines that currently use direct injection besides the ms3 an ms6 are diesel engines.
With direct injection the fuel injector injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber. The fuel pressure for these systems are normaly around 1500-5000psi. Currently there are no computers that can tune this type of setup being that it is gasoline and not diesel. You cannot use extra injectiors without first installing a secondary fuel pump and running a seperate line up to the engine. An FPR and any fuel line you use would explode under the pressure if you used one with the direct injection setup.

though it obviously helps, i run my open diff on open tracks quite often and can pass awd cars as well as rwd cars with lsd's...it's all in how and when you put it down. not a "need" off the bat.

the gov doesn't exist in any form on a HiBoost car, just limited by gear/drag...so not concerned with that.

the ONLY reason to even think about the speed is the warranty...there's just no way to have anything against that. it's a nice feature if that's what you are looking for. but people are already mentioning fmic's (got a speed6 going to HiBoost this month for it), and though i'm sure you can fight it, but dealers will give one hell of a b**** about engine problems with that in place...so is warranty still the issue?

the speed6 guys are swapping out BOV's already, making intakes from setups for the stock 6's (both 4 & 6cyl versions), changing exhaust and looking at downpipes. there are issues with boost lost as well already, that people are getting from day #1 that hasn't been resolved yet (hoping it will on the 3), and try getting something like that looked at with an FMIC.

given the 3 is a detuned 6 since the fwd is viewed "pointless" with that much power (though we all want it), there is no way to tune it back yet. so if you are content with the typical intake/exhaust mods and stopping there...get your warranty...if you like to mod, then stick to the good ol base version and going from there.

and for those that think the speed suspension is better than what's already available have some things to read up on.

you bet your surfing ass they are. It is really dissapointing. i would like to see how many sedan vs hatch 3 have been sold every year. if there was a market preference for the hatch then i could maybe understand.

ah, my mistake I misinterpetted it as ignition(stupid me), thanks for the correction a nd you are VERY correct.

I totally agree.......with the surfing part. but seriously, I do agree with that whole post

Touche, I would have bought a sedan if I coulda fit my boards with my system in back. lol when I was checking out the cars I brought my boards out from my car and tried to fit them in the trunk, sadly they didnt fit. Im not bias against YOU sedan people.

I definately do think they should have made both versions available with the mazdaspeed3, because many people completely hate hatchs\wagons while the outnumbered people who have them typically love them.

BTW lately I traded in wet water for frozen water, hooked on snowboardin now haha.

Its hard for me to take sides, I had trouble deciding between the hatch and sedan. I just think they should have made both available, even though I have no intention of upgrading to ms3....unless I get an amazing deal through my friend

thats what the roof rack is for.
snowboarding rocks! but not nearly as much as surfing. i am surfer converted to snowboarder due to lack of ocean around me.

I am really bitter that they are not making a sedan. i dont think i have ever been so upset with a car manufacturer.

I think it has mostly been said that that if you are looking to make alot of powe rand have a very good handling car a base Mazda3 is the way to go.

MS3 is perfect for those that want to have a fast car that handles good with a warranty.

It will be hard for the MS to make some big power without alot of money.
