Ms3 Mpg

I've only had mine for a couple weeks now and am I bit disappointed with my 20.9 avg. Especially considering I'm drivin it like an old lady.

I'm hopin the Injen CAI I've yet to install will make a difference.

So for those with a trip computer... what's everyone averaging?

measured once. drove 190 miles and used7.15 g
180 on i75. cruise at 80 mostly and 10 miles of 45mph 4lane

I didn't know you had a learning disability.

I generally like to run the heater in winter, since you, cold and all. When snow melts it makes water - I know its pretty high concept, but you'll just have to trust me. This water slooshes around the floor matts and soaks into the carpet and generally makes a mess, and makes pedals all squeeky. Then when the car gets shut off, you'll be suprised to know that the heater no longer works. Then water freezes to ice. Crazy I know! WHAT A COUNTRY!

And yes, 90W gear oil gets pretty syrupy at -30. 'Frozen solid' is hyperbole.

Man, have you ever considered cleaning off your boots before you get into the car? Maybe pour the gallons of water out of your mat before parking it for the night?

"your windows have a 1/2" thick layer of frost on them on the INSIDE"

You apparently like hyperbole, but it gets in the way of readers understanding. How hyperbolic is that 1/2" of frost?

Very hyperbolic. Same frost you get on the outside but its inside.

You should really get a chance to live in winter hell for a while, it'll make you appreciate warm weather a whole lot more. Constantly wet socks, trudging through miserable white crap that sticks to your jeans, snow blowing into the car every time you open the door. You can kick your boots off all you want but you'll never get all the snow out from the grooves.

It soaks into the carpet, the area around your pedals is just gross with dirt and slush all the time. The seats are like sitting on granite, NO hyperbole there. You can only ever get about 12hp to the ground so it doesnt matter what you're driving anymore. Shock absorbers no longer absorb any shock. And no taking your floor matts out and emptying them won't do much unless you put them in a tumble dryer for a while. Its just mysery man, it really is. Makes everyone's temper short too. I'm so glad its over.

This weekend I'm bolting on the Potenzas, finally feel what WOT feels like again! And I might get more than 200 miles per tank!

I've been really impressed with the mileage I've been getting. On a recent trip from Austin to Dallas, on the back-roads, with frequent extra-legal and un-economical speeds, I averaged 30.1mpg for the 270 mile trip. On my current tank, mostly around town, I'm at about 28 (according to the computer). I have the MS CAI and CBE.

Miles Driven: inconsistent, probably 50% highway (no regular commute)
Gallons burned: calc MPG: ~28
I usually fill up at: Exxon, Qt, Wherever
I shift at: <3k if I'm just driving normally
I generally cruise at: 80hwy, 45 city (I shift up till my rev's are around 2k for cruising)
I go into top gear at: 45-50 (unless I'm accelerating to highway speed - if I'm cruising at 45 I'll go ahead and shift to 6th)
My driving habits resemble: I'm usually faster than everyone else at the light, but once up to speed I'm steady.

I get decent mileage and I drive like an asshole most of the time. I think the trick is to just get up to the speed you want and throw it in 6th gear. The car has enough torque to maintain speed in 6th and it uses far less gas in OD. There's no reason to row through all 6 gears when your doing the speed limit, and further more there's no reason to leave it in 3rd or 4th on back roads if fuel consumption is a concern for you.

I've been averaging 20mpg for a while now. I've gone from one extreme to the other with driving style and nothing has changed it. It would be nice to not have to fill up every 240-250 miles.

Any suggustions on why my fuel mileage is so poor? Other than driving style I would assume it is because my car runs so pig rich that it's affecting other things, such as my plugs.

~26 MPG on the last two tanks. Was getting 23-24 during the winter months. When do they switch to summer blends? Or have they already?

Don't know about when, but there is a lot of information from EPA:

"The presence of oxygenates in RFG may result in a 1 to 2 percent reduction in gas mileage in some vehicles when compared to fuel in which oxygenates have not been used. However, gas mileage is affected - to a greater extent - by type of engine, driving habits, weather conditions, and vehicle maintenance."

In another place they say 1-3%. Either way, it's not alot. If you normally get 26 then you will get 25.2-25.7 mpg instead.

Not every one gets reformulated gas: http://epa.gov/otaq/rfg/whereyoulive.htm

More importantly, when will the Fascists that run our state give us back the choice to use a non-ethanol blended fuel? (argh)

I've got 29000 miles on my 2008 MS3GT and have logged every tankful using an Excel spreadsheet. I drive mostly highway miles commuting three times per month between Tallahassee and Orlando, FL. I generally set the cruise control at 80mph. I buy the vast majority of my gas at Costco and was told that, at least in Tallahassee, the supplier is Amoco (unconfirmed). So far the overall average MPG has been 24.52. I have gotten as much as 29MPG.
A factor that is very significant but often overlooked is the effect of wind -specifically headwind component- on highway mpg on a turbocharged car. I you have the cruise control set at your "normal" speed and a headwind exists, you will not notice the increase in boost that the ECU will command to maintain your RPM. I have noticed differences of up to 5mpg due to a 7 or 8 mph headwind at 80mph cruise speeds (approx 3250 rpm).
In general, I was hoping for slightly better mpg in cruise, but realistically, I think 24.5 is a fair price to pay for a car that has such unusual performance capability.

Hey! What about tail winds?

(cheers2)

I have always filled up with 93oct, anybody think that's why I get lower fuel mileage, avg 20-22.

Gmac

wow 20 or less mpg seems super low. I used half of my last tank at the track/driving like an ass and still got 23 mpg avg.

I commute 80 miles a day RT, my car says I get about 27 mpg avg.
I manually calculate every fill up and I get a 25-26mpg avg.

And for the people that try to shift at low RPM's to avoid turbo spool and what not, you get like 7-12 mpg while getting your speed up regardless of what rpm you shift at. I say just get up your your cruising speed as fast as possible (without drag racing everytime) and you'll do fine.

I just got my MS3 a couple weeks ago, and just used up my first full tank today. Calculated the MPG to be 24. Trip computer went up from 25.3 to 25.6. I drive about 80% on the highway and 20% city.

yeah the computer on mine always says i get more than i really do, usually 2-3miles off. this last trip the computer said i got 35 miles per gallon, but it actually was 31.6, but that is still pretty fing impressive.

i calculate mine everytime i get gas and it's slightly improving from winter due to the weather warming up. winter i was probably getting 19-20, and now im getting 21-22. i expect those numbers to keep increasing as it gets warmer, it just sucks that i pretty much do city miles all the time
