but wait....I have the AVC-R boost ontroller but not yet hooked up..could I even do gear based boost using the mpi? Id need a diff fuel curve and timing curve for like every gear if i was running different boost

Thanks everyone for the advice!! I asked Nick to send me a map similar to what I need. So I will start there, and if I have to, download one that works better from the library. Then I will try to find someone with a dyno shop, and have them help if I am having problems getting the find tuning in there. Nick is being cool, also. He said to stay in contact and ask questions, so I can get it tuned properly. I am not exactly stock, and I do already have gauges. I took them out of my show car, so they have been there since I first brought my car home from the dlr. I do want to find an AEM UEGO wideband O2, however. I found a really cool one at one time, that is digital, and very accurate. I am going to look that one up, and use it if I can't find a programmable one like the AEM for a reasonable price. Do I need a programmable one, or can the MPI do all of this for me? I have a narrow band Autometer C2 series, along with a boost gauge, and soon I will have my Greddy Profec B Spec II to control boost and keep better track of it. I just have hard pipes, HKS SSQV, Injen/AEM hybrid CAI, and colder plugs. I am considering the plugs CorkSport sells, which are Platinum, but a step colder. I saw a post in here that the MPI does not like the NGK 7 or 11 copper plugs. I have those now, I will probably get rid of them. Other than that...the Greddy EVOII exhaust they used my car to prototype is due at the end of the month from Japan, and I will hopefully find some sort of downpipe/midpipe setup when I get that one, to free up airflow. So that is what I am going to need a map for, and what I am going to need to tune for. I am also going to need to factor in the dry, warm air around here, and the altitude and whatnot, correct? Again, thanks for all the hints. I may check out that soldering iron too, Linux...thanksLittle Beavis said:One person drive, one tune. . .that's the easy way to do it. . .maybe the "only" way!
If I had to tune and drive, I'd probably crash.
nictlg7, get a hold of someone's map with a similar setup and use that as a baseline. If you're basically stock, there won't be too many "changes" in the map and what changes there are will be small. You should see a lot of timing added or pulled or a lot of fuel added or pulled, so you might be "okay" until you can afford gauges to verify what you are doing.
As far as a shop tuning it, you are unlikely to find someone familiar with the software, so grab a friend and learn - you might as well become the local expert, it isn't too hard.
BTW, your car is pretty sweet 505. I had plans to do many of the same things you did, actually. I have to do a piece at a time though, because I am on a strict budget. Everything on my car now has been paid for by parts I sold off of my very expensive show car. I just sold that car to my exgf, so I have no more parts to sell. I was nice enough to give her everything that was on the car at the time, including my awesome stereo and suspension setups, which we were going to remove if we sold it to anyone else. It sucks that to be able to afford to mod these things properly, you almost have to do something illegal to pay for it. Haha...Late505zoom said:You have to drive it. I tune by myself, but it is easier if you have someone to work the laptop while you drive.
Most of us that have been boosting non-FI proteges for awhile are actually quite paranoid. Others have bit the dust for "little mistakes", so many of us are way overkill (me being one of them, I know that). Can't be too safe can you?Saban said:Are we being a little Paranoidjust a thought

I said before and I'll say again, if you aren't trying to extract every horsepower you can, you will be fine without all the fancy gauges, but they DO help.
It's frustrating for everyone who is just starting out tuning...I am lucky b/c i am very close to nicks shop...and can go down to have him help tune out my ride.igdrasil said:you are slow...(outie)
yeah well...im the one that lost the engine...this is so frustrating...
Anyway, I think im going to unplug the MPI from the injectors and make it only run the extra injectors and pull the timing....what you think?
That is nice #'sacidbbg said:It's frustrating for everyone who is just starting out tuning...I am lucky b/c i am very close to nicks shop...and can go down to have him help tune out my ride.
Latley we have been testing some new things out..and everything looks very promising.
And for the Record. I am boosting at 10psi...My a/f with stock injectors is at 11.6-11.8. With no problems.

low 14s?acidbbg said:Thanks
I will be going to the track next weekend..I need some more time to eak some more power. I want low 14s!

I am getting closer to running that much boost. I ran 7 PSI of boost tonight! My lower gears are rich as hell though! I can nail the throttle in 5th gear, and take off!!!acidbbg said:It's frustrating for everyone who is just starting out tuning...I am lucky b/c i am very close to nicks shop...and can go down to have him help tune out my ride.

The way it looks we may be able to run as much as 12psi on the stock injectors only. Charles and I have been working with his car with the stock injectors only. We have been testing what the open air filter and air temp sensor under the hood can do to the AFR. So far the changes we made have worked.LinuxRacr said:I am getting closer to running that much boost. I ran 7 PSI of boost tonight! My lower gears are rich as hell though! Me of course...MPNick said:Please let me know if anyone with the MPI Tuner needs any help at all.
What? (confused)MPNick said:The good thing being able to test Charles car is he does not care if he blows his engine or not, well that my take on it anyway.
Thanks again

The extra injectors are great for the big power. You do not need them for lower boost. No system can get you as much power from the stock injectors as ours and still have the car idle better then stock and no drive problems at all. You should be able to run alot of boost the stock injector only, plus you can fine tune the idle and part throttle.igdrasil said:Me of course...
This is my last chance to make the MPI run as it should be. I dont know about tunning stock injectors. Last time I tried....recording log files I remember running so lean that i heard some explosions and knock that may have contributed to the failure.
This engine im running has never been touched and Im very very very skeptical with this now.
I made the aditional injector setup, but they are close to the vics valves so...I dont know if the fuel is going to go down as they open or...continue thru the plenum.
I thought this was known from a long time ago.MPNick said:One other thing that we have found. The valve cover needs to have the hose going back to the inlet tube, somewhere behind the MAF. If you have a breather on barb cover out of the valve cover it is a leak and it will cause problems.
Thanks again
