Given Mazda's "modular" audio systems, it seems like it should be possible to swap the trim panels of stereos and switch between models which share the same wiring.
In particular, it looks like the plugs on the back of 06-09 Mazda3 stereos are the same as my 2008 Mazda5. Anyone know whether this swap should work (non-Bose to non-Bose)?
("Why," you ask? Well the CD player has gone out (freezes) on my 5, and if I am replacing it, I'd like to add MP3, but the used factory MP3 options for the 3 are considerably cheaper and more common. Why do I want to go factory? Well, I'm generally not attracted to the flashing displays on so many aftermarket units, nor with having to deal with an imperfect aftermarket bezel/kit. Plus, would I lose the functionality of the controls for the unit on my steering wheel and the display of audio data in the display above the stereo?)
Bottom line, if I can get a used Mazda3 unit for $50-90 and it is plug and play once I swap the front panel, that's a much better deal to me than anything available aftermarket.
Anyone done this? OR have inside information about whether it is possible?
