Mile Per Gallon!!!!

In city driving, from light to light, from stop sign to the next, the key factors that affect MPG are
- weight
- tire widths
- idling control (lean burn, iStop, etc.)

In highway driving,
- final over-drive ratio (don't care if it is 4/5/6-speed transmission)
- Cd (CX9 is 0.36) (tire width affects Cd also)
(weight is less a factor for highway driving - assuiming proper tire pressure)

From my experiences of owning a CX9 GT AWD for 3 yr and 35K miles,
10-11mpg is likely for city short drives (less than 2-3 miles)
15 mpg is likely for normal city drives
22 mpg is normal for long highway trips.
24 mpg is achieveable if you do 65 mph all the way....

My commute is 16 mile long with 50/50 city/highway mix.
I get 17-18mpg everyday based on well-tuned ScanGaugeII-X.

Hi All,
Just bought a used 07 CX-9 GS AWD, and on my first 2 tanks got about 14L/100 kms, (approx 16 mpg) on a mix of Highways/suburbs. Just wondering if there are any 07s on here (most appear to be 08's and up with the 3.7 L), and if you'll are getting similar mileage. Also, it's been a really cold winter, and I'm wondering if that has a significant impact on MPG. thanks.

I am getting 20 Mpg city and 24-26 Highway MPG out of my cx9. This is Hand calculated and with an ultragauge, computer. This is over the last 3000 miles. I do have a soft steady foot as well as the mileage computer helps you to change bad driving habits.

But why did they need to go to the larger, less efficient engine? Certainly not performance, because there wasn't any gained. 12hp? and 10% less mileage. Hmmmm

You answer...From Motor Trend...

Last June, when the CX-9 beat the Acura MDX and GMC Acadia, it was motivated by a 3.5-liter V-6 pumping out 263 horses and 249 pound-feet. Refined and robust, the 3.5 was no slow-poke, delivering 0 to 60 in 8.1 seconds and the quarter mile in 16.3 at 85.3 mph. Just the same, for 2008, Mazda enlarged the CX-9's V-6 to 3.7 liters, boosting output to 273 horses and 270 pound-feet. The bump in power is manifested not only at the track-0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds and the quarter mile in 16.0 at 87.5 mph-but also in the real world, where three tenths are more than welcome on a twisty road or when carrying seven passengers.

And BTW, wife is getting about 19mpg mix of highway/city driving

Motor Trend re-did a test on 2011 Mazda CX9 (check youtube.com).
The 0-60 came down to 7.3 sec!!!
60-0 braking = 116ft (considering the 4550 lbs of weight!!!)

I am averaging around 14 mpg in new york city. When i went on a trip to virginia i average around 24.5 mpg doing around 75 on the highway. The highway mpg surprised me a bit since the window sticker says 21 mpg. The city mpg is close to the 15 mpg on the window sticker. Could this vehicle be more fuel efficient? i guess so but i cannot complain. My windstar was eating more fuel than the mazda.

I think you have the FWD CX9, correct?
With AWD, 21-23 mpg is normal at 75mph.
City driving heavily depends on the definition of "city" and driving habits.

I get 10mpg when I bus my kids to school: 2 miles round trip, 4 lights, 5 stops, 25mph school zone.
If the CX9 is warmed up before that, 14mpg, same routine.

No ceric i have the all wheel drive version. That was the one thing that i was looking for when i purchased the car as well as a real third row seat. It came down to either the honda pilot 4wd or the cx9 all wheel drive. I was being offered a pilot ex-l 4wd for 26k brand new, but it was too small in the back. That third row is for toddlers. As for the gas mileage trust me i was just as surprised as you are.

I recently got 25.2 mpg going on a 45 mile trip, and 24.2 on the way back. Mixture of flats and small hills both ways. One thing though, my Cx-9 appears to get better gas mileage when it is rainy or high humidity conditions.

My wife has a lead foot and averages 17 mpg in mixed driving. I told her she might as well go back to driving a Yukon Denali if that is the best she can get with her CX9. She said no way, the CX9 is to much fun to drive to go back to a full size SUV.
I have gotten 21 mpg on a road trip or two. We have a 2009 GT awd.
