Miata spyshot.

I'd hope that they would at least do some work with the cams, put some forged internals in (I'm not sure what it has from the factory). Definitely an ecu upgrade. . . but it does seem rather large/heavy for a miata. I think a turbo aluminum 2.0L would be a nice fit :)

miata will never have a rotory engine. thats reserved for the rx line. a miata with a wankle would be more expensive and cut into the sales of the future rx7.

I agree & I can't wait for the 4g RX7. (evil)

Wow, you guys are behind... these pictures are at *least* a coupel months old...

It's a test mules car.. they just tack on whatever sheetmetal they can get to sorta fit while they test a new design of underpinnings...

And I agree.. a 2.3L at only 160 is going to add a lot of weight for only a minimal gain in power... Only real things to note from these pictures is really a tad bit longer wheelbase, a tad wider and a few other minute differences..

Here's more..

if its a test mule why go tthru the trouble of tacking on the RX8 front end...why not leave it stock?(dunno)

i hope they dont make the car heavy. the miata should never weigh more than 2300lbs. any more than that and the car would have lost one of its purposes

Maybe the new stuff won't fit in a stock Miata & they needed extra space up front.

Take a look at how much longer that nose is than a stock miata... that's not quite normal...

**** the miata anyways, give me a decent 2 door coupe that I can afford (and fit in )before I leave Mazda all together.

I never thought I'd ever buy a 4 door in my life. What's next, mini van? No f'n way.

would any of you even seriously consider buying a rotary Miata??? (not that Mazda has any plan to do that)

i think most of you are still too afraid of the rotary to take the plunge no matter what car it's put in.

i can handle a rotary....throw a turbo renesis(280ish HP) in the miata and woo wooooooooooooo(drive)

got a point, the rotary has to be started at least 1ce every day, they need to find a apex seal that doesnt dry out as fast..

I think the nose is so long because of the RX-8 front end grafted on, if it was truely that long the wheel gap wouldn't be so awkward. . . . Why are they going back to the RX-7, if it's new, why not RX-9?

because hopefully the new 7 will just be a modern iteration of the old and not a completely different car like the 8 is. :D

The photos: The body looks like a 2nd generation Miata from the bulkhead back, except for the rocker panels which don't seem to be there. It looks like they stuck on an RX-8 hood, front bumper, and front fenders, but they don't fit very well. The headlights actually look like the 2001+ Miata projection headlights. It does look like the body is sitting really high up above the wheels, but that could be because we're looking from the inside of a turn. I really doubt that this was done as a styling exercise.

The engine: It was made pretty clear that the next generation Miata will have a 4 cylinder engine from the Mazda3. I don't think anybody knows if it will be the 2.0L or the 2.3L version. You all do realize that the 2.0 and 2.3 both use the same block, so they weigh about the same, don't you? You do realize that the 1.8L engine in the current Miata has an iron block, and the new engines are aluminum? The new engine is likely to make the car lighter and improve the weight distribution, not make it heavier.

I doubt that they will make a rotary Miata, but I'd take a serious look if they did. The design would have to take full advantage of the rotary's light weight and small size (mounted as low and far back as possible) to make me want to buy.

I stand corrected on the engine weight. . . will the new car be bigger? What's the overall size difference between the 1.8L and the engines out of the 3?

Yeah, you're right. The individual lenses are too small to be the '01 lights.

So why put an RX-8 front end on a 2nd-generation Miata? Did they need more room under the hood for the V-12 conversion? ;)

Oh, and I guess I shouldn't have listed light weight as one of the Renesis' assets...apparently it's 275 pounds, the same as the Honda K20A 2.0L engine.
