metal in oil pan

I dropped the oil pan on my mazda protege yesterday and found a lot of metal shavings in the oil pan. The reason I dropped it is because it was acting like it was locked up, so I started taking out the plugs one at a time and it will crank and run with the #2 plug out of it, but will act like locked up if I put the #2 plug back in it. I was told it was the #2 rod bearings so I dropped the oil pan and pulled all the rod bearing caps and they all looked good. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

no, they were not scorched, but I found the problem, main bearings were totally shot and looked like someone took a grinder to them. Do I have to pull the engine completely out of the vehicle to change the main bearings?

You really need to replace the engine or take the engine out and have a rebuild done to it. I just dont like the idea of changing the bearings in the car with no machine work. We have never had any luck of doing this when the customers request this.

ok, are the JIS rebuild kits any good? Do I need to go back standard, undersized or oversized?

it all depends on how the crank looks. I was able to roll in new main bearings with the crank and all still in the car. if there are no imperfections on the crank at all, id replace your oil pump and roll new mains and rods in and clean out the engine real good
