Messed up Oil change

Sorry... I gotta vent.....

I just took my 5 to the dealer for the 1st oil change. We bought our whitewater touring 5 in November... one of the first on the island, and only had 2000 miles on it but decided to stick with the "suggested" heavy traffic schedule.

The changed the oil pretty quick. On the way home I noticed that the engine was louder than normal and the was a funky smell. I figured that it was another car infront of me (I had the windows down and sunroof open). I was parking the car and saw fumes coming from the hood compartment. I said WTF and opened the hood to find oil all over the engine compartment. The tech did not put the oil cap back on.

Needless to say I'm not a happy camper..... Now I have a rental nissan quest (that thing is HUGE!!!) and am without my 5 for several days.

Good thing is that there was still a lot of oil in the engine and the only thing wrong was the oil all over the place. I am having the dealership replace all the lining and detail the engine compartment...

Word to the wise... check everything before you leave the stealership......

Of all the possible repairs that can be done to a car, it amazes me how something so simple (like replacing an oil cap) is always overlooked. At least it wasn't too late.

My boss' wife picked up her 3 mos. old Civic from the dealership after an oil change; she made 2 miles before the car burst into flames and burned to the ground. The "tech" forgot to install the pan drain plug!(nailbyt)

My driving instructor told us that he got an oil change (would not tell us which company he went to) done and he went to pick up his car. He checked his dipstick and found no oil have been put in. I guess he is lucky that he checked before driving away.

And I have a friend that went to one of those rapid oil change stations and had the correct amount of oil put in twice...

Which leads to the same problem as no oil after it all foams up and the pump can push the foam around enough.

Yes, I think it's a good idea to check their work before going too far.

My car hit 3000 miles today, so I stopped by the autoparts store and they have no filters in stock and/or available for the 5. (or 3) Where could I get an oil filter for my car? (obviously, I could try the dealership, but they usually **** the customer).

Saw it at Pepboys last summer was around $8-$10.

If you can wait another week get it online for ~$5-$6 (w/order total of at least $50). We have four cars in the family so $50 comes quicky.

Getting ready to do mine. Could only find a Fram filter. Using Mobil 1 synthetic. What's everyone else using? 5W20?

I took a OEM filter down to my friendly auto parts store to compare it with a FRAM filter. The differences were obvious - the Mazda filter is superior. First, the filter media of the Mazda filter was of a denser material. There were more pleats in the OEM filter, meaning that the element has more area than in the FRAM. The element was taller, about an eighth of an inch, adding further to the filter area. The formers, top and bottom of the filter, are made of plastic, not cardboard as in the FRAM. Furthermore, the felt (seal?) is wider and denser on the OEM filter. Lastly, the Mazda filter was cheaper than the FRAM.(doh)

I'd only use a factory filter. They are less than $7 usually.

Aftermarket filters are fine, but the o-rings are known to tear and leak.

Just a FYI.

We've already put in maybe 5 motors in Mazda 3's for local quick lubes that used crappy o-rings.

what brand did you get? you are better off sticking with OEM filters, get them from the dealer or online

Once I did that myself after I changed the oil!! Coming off the freeway there was smoke coming off from the hood. I thought I had blown my engine!!! Fortunatly, my oilcap was stuck somewhere in my engine bay... phew!!

Fram is the worst of the mass market oil filters. Wix/Napa, Mobil 1, AC Delco, and Motorcraft are all excellent filters and every bit as good if not better than OEM. I use Purolator's regular filters, which are the best of the mass market low cost filters. Construction and media are very solid and they are routinely on sale after rebate for 50 cents each around my parts.

Check www.bobistheoilguy.com/ and access the forums for discussions on oil related topics.

Another interesting site is minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html, showing cut open filters. The cheapness of Fram filters is evident.

Bottom line: there is no reason to spend $6 on an OEM filter. Massive waste of money.
