MazdaSpeed Protege Kenwood 8" sub

I have the 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege with the Kenwood stereo. It comes with an 8" sub. I have blown the sub twice and I don't listen to the stereo at volume levels that should blow the sub. Does anyone here have a speed and have the same problem? I am perfectly happy with the stereo when the sub isn't blown. Just curious if anyone else has had problems.

yeah everyone has the same problem the Kenwood Subs in general pretty much suck unless its the excelon series and even then its only slighty above average.

JL audio and Audiobahn i think both make a 8' sub that will work well in the factory space.

If not throw it all out and get a real amp and subs heh

I pound the s*** out of my sub all the time, and I love how it sounds, just enough bass for me. I've had the car for over a year now and I've worked the sub over for sure. No problems yet (knock on wood)

For the LAST TIME: ITS NOT THE SUB, ITS THE AMP!!!

The gain on the amp was turned WAYYYY up from the factory...we have crappy crappy Kenwood amps to run the sub. What to do? Go out and buy an Alpine MRP-M350 or similar small sub amp/2ch amp and replace it. If you don't know what that means, goto your local stereo shop and tell them you need a new sub amp because it doesn't put out enough power.

Some people have noticed the gain was too high and others not. It really dpends on if the user is boosting up the bass and/or is using the NF level as they should.

Its not the amp. The amp is fine but its restricted by the sub being an 8 ohm load. If your running a Alpine MRP-M350 to the factory sub you are only putting out around 125-150 watts rms (instead of it potential 350) which is eactly what the factory amp is capable of, just not with the factory sub. Put in a 4 ohm sub and you'll hear basicly the same improvement.

my sub cone popped off and i fixed it by superglueing the cone back on to the foam and it works like it did as new

if you got a bit of extra $$ rip out that nasty little sub anf th giant box, or at least thats what they call it and thow a 12 inch ported back there...i did it about a month ago, im still using the stock amp to power it and there is a huge difference in the amount of bass you get

thats exactly what I did, and it makes a world of difference. Question though, is there any slack in the lines that run to the amp? I want to pull the amp off of the rack and put it somewhere it won't overheat and get rid of that god awful plastic monstrosity in our trunks, but I don't know if I can without wiring more.

there is zero slack in just about all the wires. i just ran a new power wire back there cuz i hooke up a 2nd amp for the 6x9's i put in the deck. if u need more wire you could always cut those connectors off and get some more wire. but i could have mounted my amp right on top of the 12 box with the stock wires

just yesterday i rewired my amp and replaced the stock sub w/ a JL 8w3v2d4 sub... it sounds great. its a little messy in my trunk right now though, but thats okay w/ me for now, because it'll be cleaned up and purtified relatively soon anyway :) but, it makes a world of difference w/ the new sub.

this just popped into my head, if you do not use the stock yellow power wire for the amp, may sur eyou pull out the 15 amp fuse up in the engine bay so that way if it touches something there is no power flow in the wire

My sub blew with less then 2 weeks on it the first time.

Right now its unplugged because guess what its blown again. I think I am just going to put in some 6x9's and get a real amp and sub installed.

If you need any help or someone to bounce ideas off of, let me know. I am in Nashua.

I was thinking of replacing all the internal speakers in time with something like the Kappa series.

To start with I was looking at adding in some Kappa 6x9's and using the factory kenwood amp for that. Then I wanted to find a solo 12 to put in that doesnt' require an excessive size box.

If you have any thoughts to add please do. I have not been in tune with car audio since my high school days.
