Hey guys, i generally read your forums to get all the info on my protege 5. Well i think i may have come across a fairly decent deal. It's an entire engine, turbo, wireing harness and engine management unit from a wrecked mazdaspeed protege. All that for 1500 dollars picked up. I can also get the tranny for another 300. I was wondering if the engine is easily swapable with the stock protege 5 engine, and if that price was a good value. Let me know what you think. Ciao

It is the same engine as the P5. It just has the turbo and such. Not sure you would have to change out the wiring harness at all if you get the MSP ECU.

As long as you don't have an Auto tranny P5 it's a fairly straight forward swap. Remember that you'll also need the MSP radiator/SMIC/AC condensor setup as well unless you go with a FMIC. The MSP ECU is plug and play with all the manual tranny Proteges.

I have a manual P5 so ill also need the radiator and ac condensor? and what is the SMIC/FMIC , i am unfamiliar with that. Thanks for the super fast response. And if i told you where i found this deal it would be gone in the next 5 minutes so i wont ;)

If you guys can think of anything else i need, let me know, im calling the guy back monday. Anyways, if anyone has done a similar swap, i was wondering about a estimated timetable to do it. Also, would it be easier to just grab the intercooler, turbo, wireharness, pipping, and ecu, and put them on my stock engine, or to do a whole swap?

I maye be able to get the pieces for less than the whole shebang.

Thanks

That would probably be easier for you, since it would be less $$ and also less time, cause you wouldn't have to switch the engines out. It is the same exact engine, after all. Just get all the turbo components, radiator, ac condenser, ecu, SMIC, etc. Basically everthing the MSP has under the hood that your car doesn't, get it. Don't forget the ECU, of course.

True, but having another engine on hand just in case would be good, especially if you're planning on running more boost than stock...

If you have the extra space, I'd say get the engine. Then, swap out engines. Now you can upgrade your stock engine over time with rods, pistons, etc..

The reason I'd still recommend swapping is so that the engine you upgrade is the one you know has been well taken care of :)
