(pissed) Is anyone else pissed off that Mazda wimped out and went with the 2.3L engine? This makes the car (in that configuration) ineligible for the WRC circuit (as I understand it the WRC engines can be no larger than 2.0L)...
Now really, what's the point of having 4wd, that much power, and NOT a rally-legal car? (notcool)
I realise many people don't care about rallying, but now when people say that the car is now a contender against WRX's and EVO's, it isn't! YES it may be faster or handle better, but NO it's not developed for the same purpose (i.e. RALLYING!) (braindead
(strike)grr... It's now my mediocre purpose in life to try to convince Mazdaspeed that a 2.0L engine is a more appropriate mate to a 4wd drivedrain! I wonder if they could be convinced to provide an engine option... (canada)

I guess your right. This makes the WRX so much better than the STi.

2.0 is non vvt....2.3 is and then turboed i'd assume they would have a way difrent cam profile...

In the US the STi is a 2.5 liter engine. Subaru still uses a 2.0 for the WRC applications.

I don't see why Mazda couldn't do the same, if it choose to enter the WRC.

i think some of you need to screw off complaining about the 2.3l for rally reasons. I mean, who gives a s***? Only rally nuts do and that's it. The other 98% of the population will be happier having a bigger/better engine.

Just not a good reason for complaining in my eyes, sorry.

wErd. 2.3L+vvt+turbo+awd = very nice street car.

Anyone wanna bet that we don't see this equation come true until the 3 is on it's way out and a new model is on it's way....kinda like the Proto-geek?

p.s. That 2.3L with AWD better put out 300hp when it's all said and done or this 03 Evo's are going to be eating our lunch....especially when they are a few years old and only $12K used..

It might be a little bit early to get upset. More than likely we'll get the 2.3 version on this side of the pond, while the Japanese version will keep the 2.0 for the purpose of competing in rally and also because the Japanese tend to like smaller, higher-revving engines in their smaller cars. Much like the American Sti vs. the Japanese Sti, Lexus IS300 vs. the Altezza with the 2.0.

*lol* I knew I'd get very polar opinions on this... I know i'm in the minority when I say that I'd like to see mazda in the rally circuit.
I didn't know that the Japanese model would likely get a 2.0L engine... if that's the case, Japanese-spec all the way! 'course, I probably wouldn't be able to import that into Canada due to our ******* stupid bumper laws (same reason the Evo can't be sold up here)

First off, MazdaSpeed3 is very much still a rumour and for N. America will be at least 3 years away (if indeed they do make it and bring it to N. America).

Secondly, the reason for the 2.3l turbo in all the MazdaSpeed3 rumours is that Mazda has turboed the 2.3l for the MazdaSpeed6. The MazdaSpeed6 has been confirmed for production for Europe and possibly Japan (it's not coming to N. America anytime soon, if at all). World-wide, the Mazda3 and Mazda6 share several engines, so its not surprising that rumours use the 2.3l turbo for any potential MazdaSpeed3. But again, this is all rumours at the moment.

Stop bitching. Would you rather have a Mazda in the WRC and losing, or would you rather have a bigger engine and more power for everyone else in the world who drove one?

why are you assuming that mazda would lose in the rally circuit? s***, if Hyundai can make an Accent competitive why not a 3? :p

edit: (stooges) I know that many people would prefer the higher displacement engine purely for the extra power, and I understand that, I really do! Honest! (fight)
But, I (me, myself, the guy typing) love rallying and think a rally-preped 3 would look absolutely sweet. Now if I only had enough money to buy a second car.....

Hey how much would a used bone stock 3 (with the 2.0L) sell for in a year or so? Maybe I could put a more positive spin on this and see if anyone has suggestions for rally mods in a FWD 2.0L 3 or even a late model year Proteg (headbang)

if we do get a MS3, im pretty sure it will have the 2.3...whover else gets it(europe, japan, south america, australia, etc) will get the 2.0...simple as that.

hell if that is the thought then the engine might get smaller for those countries that have a tax cut for under 2.0. I say make 2 versions Mazdaspeed 3 and MazdaSpeed Rally 3 (Power nothing weight shaved turboed 2.0)

Too much money that Mazda doesn't have. I say if we get the MS3 at ALL, it will be AWD 2.3T and run a bit higher than the MSP did.

I have to agree with Newf, I don't give a rats ass about rally. I'm buying a street car if this thing comes, not a rally car. The 2.3L will be awesome!!
