Mazda5 real-world Mileage numbers

Just went to the Mobil station:

216.6 miles
13.466 gallons
16.08 mpg
15.20 mpg per computer

Hilly, city driving mostly.

Took a 500 mile trip today, after 283 miles it took right at 10 gallons to fill it up, so 28.3 mpg. '09 Sport, manual transmission.

100% interstate, traveling at 70 mph to 73 mph the entire way. Two adults and two kids, with luggage. AC was on high the entire way and it was hot outside, really hot. 108 F for the first couple of hours.

I have mixed feelings about 28 mpg on the interstate - it's not as good as sedans I've had, as an example my '99 Accord would have gotten about 33 mpg on the same trip, but about 6 mpg better than full size vans like the Odyssey or Sienna.

Put on 4 new Bridgestone Ecopia's.....newest eco friendly tire.....Got 46 MPG on a 80 mile round trip burn and turn....will post more numbers after I've had a chance to break them in. Mine is a 07 Mazda 5 with 49k on the odo.

46 MGP????? Magic tires? Even 36MPG would seem unbelievable.

80 miles is not really far enough to get a real world mpg figure. I'm sure it's possible, maybe around 40-45mph all flat, no downshifting.
I'll be taking another PA to LA trip in november and keeping track, although I'll have a fat box on the roof :(

80 miles doesn't mean a thing in terms of mpg unless you use some means of a calibrated tank. Heck, even one tank doesn't mean much when a pump can shut off a gallon early or late compared to the one you filled up with.

3-4 tanks is a worthwhile average.

We just took our 2006 Mazda 5 (with 115,000 miles) on a 2700 mile trip to New York. The car was loaded with 4 people (560 lbs) and luggage/food/stuff (maybe another 200 lbs?)

Average mileage: 28.49 mpg
Worst mileage: 26.20 mpg
Best milage: 30.20 mpg

Average distance between fills: 310.22
Fuel cost: $380.17

Average cost per mile: 14 cents
Minimum cost per mile: 12 cents
Maximum cost per mile: 15 cents

Average gas price: $3.75/gal
Minimum gas price: $ 3.54/gal
Max gas price: $4.05/gal

Respectable mileage rkhanso, but are you on EMPTY @ 310 miles per tank? We average 375 miles between tanks for our everyday driving.

I'm not driving until empty when on vacation out on the Interstate. I fill at around 1/4 tank left. I'm not that much of a risk taker to go 'til empty when there may not be another gas station for a while. I wasn't reporting miles per tank so much, but miles per gallon (which you can calculate the miles per tank if you'd like). I think 400+ miles per tank is not out of the question if you really wanted to get it.

I fill on a combination of fuel remaining, gas cost where I'm at, and expected gas cost where I'll need to fill again - and make my decision then.
eg. Before driving through Canada, I filled in USA first, knowing about the $5/gallon gas in Canada.

just got 32 mpg; 80% interstate (70 and 75 mph depending on state), a/c on. I'm happy anytime i get over 28 mpg.

I've still been getting pretty consistent 24.5 in our mixed driving habits; local stop and go, idling, running errands and commuting hwy.

that sounds like the pump shut off early on the fillup or it shut off late on the prior fillup, 32 just isn't really possible with the 5 running those speeds, especially with the a/c on.

I can verify it didn't shut off early -- I was expecting it would take another gallon, so when it clicked off earlier than expected, I attempted to put more in, but it clicked off again. I don't make a habit out of topping it off after the pump auto shuts off. Given the wide variability between pumps, one could argue you'd never know the exact mileage. Either way, this car gets MUCH better mileage than the CRV it replaced.

That's why I keep posting in here that you have to have at least a 3-4 tank average to have an indication of true mileage. We took a trip to Hilton Head 2 months ago with a huge cargo box on top and got around 26mpg for the highway sections.

We used to have a 2000 CRV with the 2.3L/4-speed auto and would maybe get 26mpg highway, but the newer CRVs are much larger than it was so I can understand your comment on it. I had a 2003 Element manual for a while and the best I ever got was 24mpg highway and around town maybe 20-21. Boxes just aren't made for highway mileage...

I'll be taking a LONG trip w/ a roof box in november and I'll report my results. but when we made the same trip 2 yrs ago, same setup, IIRC we were getting 27-29. I might have posted back then about it but I didn't look it up :(

The filler necks are weird and are adversely affected by slight surface issues like not being level or dipping in one place. I don't believe 32 MPG no matter what the circumstances. I have seen 34 MPG on mine, but i know it's bogus.
