Mazda5 real-world Mileage numbers

I've found the fueleconomy.gov site to be pretty good and has a ton of real-world estimates.
I've actually logged almost every fill-up on there for our Mazda5, it's been great to see the graph of the gas mileage over time.
We average around 21mpg w/ the bulk being stop/go city driving, some highway. I don't think we've ever gotten over 30mpg on hwy (Auto 5-spd tranny).

Same here, around 21.5 average for our normal driving and high 20's for highway though we typically have either a bike rack or roof box on for long trips.

I used to use fueleconomy.gov but it only tracks in miles and gallons, converting units is a bit of a hassle. Fuelly just does it all for you and you can get a sense of what other people are getting there.

put in all my info on fuelly last night finally. i've only had the car since august and have yet to have any clue what the actual mileage was. its better than i expected slightly. my best tank was 26.4 US MPG. considering roughly 75% of the driving i do in this car is city driving, its pretty good IMO.

Took a trip last weekend...San Bernardino to Solvang; Solvang to San Bernardino. 370 miles to one tank back and forth trip with 5 people (800lbs) and A/C on. 28mpg. Awesome!!

The level of ethanol doesn't change, regular grade gasoline will have up to 10% ethanol year round. They can't add more because our vehicles can't handle it unless they're flex fuel capable. Rather, it's butane that they add to gasoline blends to winterize it.

I don't know why I only get around 20mpg in town, so the ScanGauge shows. I have a 2010 MZ5 auto with only 17000. Recently changed both air and cabin air filters. Regular 4 month / 5K oil changes. I think this car is too heavy for the 2.3l 4-cylinder. Maybe that is why it gets crappy mileage. I wonder if those 6 cylinder Impalas really get 18mpg in the city or do they get more like 14 mpg in the city? Hmmm, I wonder.

With short trips or stop and go, I will see 20MPG. I average 25MPG day to day otherwise.

My Ultra Gauge is now inaccurate with the switchover to summer gas, it claims I am using more gas than I actually am.

Just got 34mpg out of my 08 5AT. I was a bit surprised it was that good and had to do the math twice to confirm. I've got 93k on it now.

I just changed air filters to a fram 2x filter and my mileage went up substantially!! 3 tanks in a row of 8l/100km! I've gone from 24.6 mpg to 29mpg!!! No other changes!!

And that's with 190,000km on the od!

2006 AT with 209,000 miles

I run 150-200 miles/day during the work week, about 120 of that is commuting 60-70mph and the rest is various urban driving. I tend to be aggressive around town and use the auto shift a lot, I but keep the cruise set at posted speeds on the highways. My mpg ave is generally 26-27 per tank like clockwork. Typical fill-up is around 340-350 miles and 12.5-13 gallons

Off topic, but can you tell us about your ATX? Still on the original? How often do you flush it?

Yes... original transmission still in the car. Only work done to my 5 has been standard maintenance items as things wear out... tires, brakes, shocks, spark plugs, battery, etc. It has not "broken down" or needed to be in the shop for anything else.

I went past 100k on the original fluid before finally flushing it. Would have done it a lot sooner if I knew how nasty is was. Looked bad and smelled worse... stunk up my garage for days. I flushed it by pulling the trans line, starting the car and letting it pump out the old crap, 3 quarts at a time. (As described in forum threads... thanks to those guys who posted the how-tos) It's pretty easy. Just pull the hose off the correct fitting, stick some clear tubing on it so the fluid can be pumped into a jug, bucket, etc. Use an empty milk jug, mark it @ about 3 qts.... start the car and let it fill up to the mark, turn off car. Put 3qts fresh fluid in the trans (very slowly down the dipstick tube) and repeat that 3 times... total of 9 qts pumped out and 9 qts new.

I have flushed it the same way a couple times since.... about 150k and 200k. The first flush, I also pulled the pan and changed the filter, but have not done that again.

Last time, I used Valvoline synthetic muli-vehicle fluid and it seems to be doing very well. I was starting to hesitate when downshifting, resulting in a hard 3-2 shift going around right hand turns, etc. It's much better after the flush now. When not racing... the trans is very smooth, shifts nice.

on topic: couple weeks ago, I switched up gas again. Sometimes I get better mileage on 87 instead of our local ethanol blend 89-91. (87 costs more)

After averaging 26mpg four tanks in a row... slightly less than I had been getting, I decided to try some 87 since a local Pilot truck stop had it at the same price as the "cheap stuff".

Ran 87 for two tanks and got 30.5 and 30.2 mpg.... flirting with 400 miles per tank!!!

That's the best I have ever seen, and I have run about 700 tanks in 6 years.

I just put in a tank of the cheap stuff again today, and the wind is blowing 20mph this week so I don't expect good #'s when I fill up in a couple days.

I just bought an 08 Sport AT and my first tank of gas was a disappointing 18mpg... But it's hot here so the AC is always on, and I've been driving aggressively (digging the zoom-zoom (yes) ) and I'm doing about 80% stop-and-go, the rest on the interstate. Although here in Louisville the interstate is often stop-and-go too. I can't wait to see some numbers from a long road trip.
