Mazda5 real-world Mileage numbers

Last three tanks: 80% city streets; short trips; hilly terrain:

605.5 miles
39.996 gallons
15.14 mpg
15.10 mpg per trip computer

Granted my type of driving is not conducive to ideal fuel economy, but 15 mpg in a small-ish car with a 157-hp four cylinder is pretty lousy. Mazda should be ashamed! If it was a turbo motor I could excuse the fuel economy, but the engine performance is borderline inadequate.

Sounds like you need to take your vehicle in for inspection, those numbers are among the worst I have ever seen on here...

Wow, that is way off the average and definitely not typical... something must be wrong. Check out Fuelly - www.fuelly.com - Of the 82 Mazda 5's being tracked the average is 24mpg, you can even dig into each individuals stats. Especially if yours is brand new?? Something is up for sure.

this says it all.

TYPE of driving environment and personal driving HABITS are everything. a pedal masher in stop and go city driving is going to have completely different results from a hypermiler on the highway.

I just had a 22.5mpg tank, which is one of my worst ever. AC on the whole time, stop and go, and 4 plus people in the van. AC makes a huge difference in mpg the city. This just confirms what most of the mpg studies show.

We're in Hilton Head and got 26mpg +/-.5 on the way down over the course of ~700 miles, with a huge Yakima Spacecase on the roof rack, 2 adults/3 kids/all our stuff onboard and the a/c on probably half of the time.

I'm guessing without the Spacecase we'd be up to 27-28.

2012 Mazda 5 Touring
Miles: 229 miles
Gallon: 7.7
MPG 29.7

Driving was 100 miles of stop and go (405freeway), rest at 75-80mph. AC was on about 80% of the time.

Once again, one tank doesn't represent your mileage---you need to average it over at least 3-4 tanks to see a representative number that is halfway close to real life.

I assume you didn't change your driving habits (too much) compared to your other cars. What do you average on your other cars, one that has been through this same leg of the road?

My first posted tank was also 29. I must have been subconsciously trying to hyper mile b/c my subsequent tanks can't seem to get over 25-26ish.

Some of my other gets 9mpg in the same road, while others get 50+. I know half a tank doesn't mean everything, but just posted to give info (and to keep track for myself), I will be posting the next few tanks, to see where it ends up.

Here are my mileage details from my trip last week.
NC to ATL, in and around ATL (with construction in ATL and on I85 on the way back); wife and son, luggage, cruise set for 75mph for as much as possible, AC on (front & rear)
Total Miles: 1121 miles
Total Gallons: 43.903
MPG for the trip: 25.5
I know many people think it should be more, but I think it's about right considering the power/weight ratio of the vehicle and the stop/go conditions on the road. As I said in a previous post, the car ran virtually flawlessly all weekend, drove and felt like it had more power than it does, didn't downshift too much on grades (NC to ATL and back isn't hilly, but it's not flat either, plus I cancelled cruise on those hills to lessen downshifting), and everyone was comfortable.

That's real close to what I got on a 700+ mile trip in SoCal.

You can also flip the shifter over to manual mode to keep the transmission from downshifting on the grades unless they are extreme.

Also, slowing down to 70 mph added about 2-3 mpg for us on the highway.

I need a transmission where the faster I drive the higher my mpg! (drive)
