A little background. Married, 1 kid (11 months old). My wife's car is a Chev Malibu Maxx LT. She likes it, I like it, no problems. I drive a '96 Chev 4x4 Extended Cab Diesel. We are suburbanites. I commute every day, my wife stays at home. My truck now has 355,000km on it and is at the stage where I am spending money on a semi frequent basis as things are wearing out (as they should at 355,000km). I like the truck because I am a farm kid and I have 3 motorcycles. The truck is intergral in hauling 2 of them, one to the race track, the other to the local offroad riding areas. Oh yeah, the diesel has a little work, I like the turbo noise and the grunt.
Since the truck really sucks to commute in(and parking in small parkades), especially in the winter, and it is costing me money, we decided it was time for a new vehicle. The original plan was to get a Honda Ridgeline as I am a truck guy, and man, that is the perfect urban truck. Room for 5, I can haul my bikes, car-like handling. My wife even loved it.
The only problem, I am cheap...err frugal, so we set a limit of $30k for a new vehicle.
The next plan was to get a sedan/wagon. We really like the versatility of the Maxx, so wagonish was the name of the game. In the end we narrowed it down to a 5 GT or a Subaru Legacy Wagon. The Legacy was right at our self imposed $30k limit, a left over 2006 5 significantly less. I really enjoyed the Legacy with the 2.5i, the AWD and the fact that it was a good drivers car. My wife disliked it all except for the trunk/hatch. Go figure. I think it was a wonderfully handsome car that had a lot of great features for the $$$. Our marriage is a democracy, so we talked, and ended up deciding on the 5.
Of course this is my vehicle, so I got a manual (take me back to my university days and my Integra) so it will involve a little input on my part in driving. It will take a little getting used. My initial impressions upon driving it was a)rev happy little motor, nice gearbox, great driving postion b) where's the torque? (my truck puts out +400lb-ft, the Maxx 220) c) the versatility was great. I can live with it.
My wife's aunt is a Mazda owner and likes the one dealership in town. I called them up, said I was looking for a 2006 5 and they told me what was in the city. I ended up getting a Snowflake White Pearl GT. I actually pick it up tomorrow afternoon.
I think the 5 will make a great city runabout and 2nd vehicle for the family. Can't wait to pick it up.
