hello,

would anyone know if you can take a folding key say from the mazda3 and program it for a p5?

thank you

^That one doesn't have the button for the panic alarm (which does come in handy even now and then....mostly scaring coworkers).

of all the different versions of flip keys that mazda has made over the years, there is only one that will work with the protege and the price was in the $200-300 range. there was a thread from many years ago discussing this very topic, but i'm sure it has long been deleted from the may forum upgrades that have taken place.

the one that sleepwalker posted up is the exact same one i bought. since the p5 doesn't use a chip in the keys, no programming is required. Just pull out the internals from your fob, cut off the panic button pop-up and get the key cut. Havent had a problem, and ive been using this for 3 months now. I got my key cut at toyota (because mazda's machine was out of service that day) for $7. If you want the switchblade then get this.

forgot to add, you could also drill a hole on the switch blade housing where the panic button is to you can keep the panic button if you use it. I just deleted the panic since it was a nuisance.

Just some semi-related info,... I wanted a spare key for my car and went to a few hardware stores looking. Only one had a blank to cut for me but the key wouldn't even fit in the keyhole.

Mazda wanted $10 for the blank and $10 to have it cut. I finally found a locksmith service that had the proper blank and had a key made for a total of $3.50.
