Any one interested in adding the center 2nd row seat? It is original JDM japanese Mazda parts. All parts are new. Includes bottom, back, head rest, and hardware. Black color. It fits the newer Mazda 5, i.e. 2012-2013. Let me know, you can email me at charisma97@hotmail.com

My concern is that in any accident, you are liable for any injuries because that seat is not suppose to be there you might not be covered in USA/Canada.
Plus you also need a seat-belt to make it work.
Best to stay away for NA use for liability reasons and lawsuit happy nature of the country.

Of corz it's not legal. If it was then mazda would have put it in the USA model. So if anyone wants to add the seat, then I can get it for u.

You are putting yourself into unnecessary liability. It is all good when everything is good, as soon as something goes wrong you know how it goes, sue everyone, including you, and figure out who pays later.

It would be interesting to see what makes it illegal in the US.

I have the Uk model and the set up is pretty much identical to my Honda CRV, with the middle seat belt exiting the roof mounting. Room across the middle row is pretty similar to any other car.

I was thinking about this since I am interested. Here’s my “SPECULATION”. The issue could very well be size/spacing. The chassis is the same as the Mazda3 (compact), which has a bench that goes door to door. The Mz5 has captain’s chairs in the middle, which are kinda wide. Add in a healthy/comfy gap between the door and the outer arm rest, you loose a good amount of seating surface area. There really isn’t much space in the middle for a full sized adult. Having a middle seat would mean cramming 3 people into a even smaller space. I can image possible heads knocking (American sized passengers) in T-bone collision.

That said, if it is cheap enough ($300-$500) I may still consider for other purposes but it sounds like it won't fit previous gen. Also, since the OP didn't mention a price it's probably too much -for me.

Does the US Mazda3 have a middle seat belt? The UK model does...

For info, we can fit 2 rear car seats and an adult in the middle row, or three adults. The amount of room in their is probably fractionally better than a Honda Accord.

These items are JDM mazda parts, so its not going to be craigslist cheap, so expect to pay the price, and keep your comments to yourselves.

I imagine the parts are the same as my UK model as well (as JDM) - might be possible for US people to source stuff from here than Japan...not sure.

Biggest PITA would be modification for the 3-point belt. If one were happy doing a 2-pt belt or was a welder and could put LATCH anchors in it so that a carseat could be used, leaving the 2 captains chairs for older kids/adults, then I could see this being viable...even a great [albeit sketchy] mod.
problem is, if it was LATCH only, eventually kids grow up, and it would become useless.

not in the middle, nor 3rd row. It is marketed as 6-passenger vehicle, cuz, you know, Americans are a bunch of fat-asses and we couldn't possibly squeeze 3 obese bodies into either row.
