Mazda 3 Transmission In '01 Protege

Ok, so a buddy of mine and I were looking for a parts Mazda Protege when we came across something interesting. We found an '02 Protege with a fully functional Mazda 3 automatic transmission with the Sport shift manual mode. Now I don't know what I need to do this conversion. I would like to know since I'm not 100% positive I can get ahold of this car. And I'm not getting snappy but, if you are just gonna tell me to go full manual then just leave that comment out unless these trannys have big problems or the such.

Any replies or ideas about this are much appreciated.
 
Can you get any pics? Because if so then that would mean that we would be able to bolt up the manual mazda3 trans, we would just have to worry about the cable set up! Please get some pics of this Frankenstien you speak of!
 
I can't get any pics cause my phone is s***. But I can tell it is most definitely a shifter from a 3. And I managed to listen as the car was leaving and it definitely had higher RPMs in the beginning of 3rd from 2nd than my auto, even if I've planted my foot to the floor. He had it up for sale, luckily I took the number down.
 
How do you know it just didnthave the regular proteges sport tronic? I'm not sure why someone would do all that work for an automatic... did you get a look at the. Trans code?

im guessing its not gona happen. id love to have that 6th gear that i sometimes try to go into for some reason
 
I think the first gen (batch) of Mazda 3's used the same tranny from the Protege... Read... http://www.protegefaq.net/transmission.html

It's the "FN4A-EL" used on the FS-DE, ZL-DE, ZL-VE, ZM-DE...... (4AT, FWD)

These transmissions are also used in various other Mazda vehicles, but their
bell housings are different. Also, there are different variations of gear
