What I mean is a better flowing one, my brother replaced his on his truck after getting a K&N gen 2 and saw almost 25 hp!!! This is where he got his. Check it out. http://www.granatellimotorsports.com
The Mass AirFlow sensor does not increase flow. It simply measures your airflow through your intake. nothing more, nothing less. I don't know what your brother is talking about. that doesnt make any sense.
they make different kinds of mass air flow sensors. i'm not sure what kind we use, but i know some restrict air flow more then others. i belive the best kind (i can't remember what its called anymore) uses a heated needle and measures how much air is flowing past it by how much it is cooled by the air.
Just to play devil's advocate:
I checked out that Ford site that afrey posted. THEY refer to the whole entire intake system (pre throttle body) as the "Mass air flow sensor" http://www.granatellimotorsports.com/fordmafautomotive.htm

Sounds like a logistics issue to me.
Words, words, words.
There is a throttle attached to the intake manifold. This contains a butterly that's controlled by your foot. It allows different amounts of air to get it.
Then there is a Air Sensor. This is attached to the back side of the airbox and it measures the amount of air coming into the sensor.
Increasing the size of both of these will increase airflow capability.
