I'm gonna be really biased on this subject, my sig says it all!

I am anxiously waiting the "double-clutch" CVT multi-tronic gearbox to become more popular among cars.ChewyChevy said:Ever driven a 1000hp monster with an auto?? Not saying I have, but I've sat in a few high hp cars in my time. They aren't the easiest thing in the world to control.
And you're saying, many road, autox and drag racers out there are not really driving (as they're driving automatics)?? I might understand one saying, driving an automatic is not really racing (which is I'm guessing what you're trying to say??)
In all honesty, the fastest (drag racing) cars in the world are all autos. Autos hold more power than manuals in my experience. Are manuals more fun?? For some yes, for others no...it's subjective.
In addition to this automatics are getting better and better with sequential shift and general build. Think autos shift too early?? Change the shift point when you're at WOT. Can't do 5000 rpm clutch dumps?? Get a higher stall TC.
More money is getting put into automatic technology than manual. Most hundred thousand dollar ultimate super cars use sequential shift nowadays. Why?? Sequential shift allows one to keep one of your hands on the wheel, and keep each foot free.
Does the Mazda3 auto hold more power than the manual, I don't know. I haven't seen any car with the tranny really up to high hp numbers. But in due time??
Not dogging a manual, I have one in 6spd form, just wanted to drop some of my experiences and knowledge to perhaps change some viewpoints....

Yes..when you're running a 4 second quarter mile you don't have time to shift...it's one gear only!goldwing2000 said:Not true. Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars don't use transmissions at all. Just a basic clutch setup that transfers engine RPM directly to the rear wheels.
That notwithstanding, automatics are for housewives.
Yes, all the research and developement is going into autos. Ever wonder why? To make them drive more like a manual! With the obvious exception of CVTs, of course. Those are meant to make your car drive more like a golf cart.
Think about it... manumatics? Sequential shift? All to make the person think they are in actual control without actually giving them control. People want the control of a manual without the commitment of a clutch and they still want the ability to chicken out and be lazy.
