LSD maintenance

I've been meaning to change mine for quite some time, but never gotten around to it. I was also curious as to how much tranny fluid our msps take?
As it says in the owner's manual, 2.7 liters.

Just curious, do people actually *READ* the manuals these days? It seems like only I, and a select few others, have actually done it.

If you guys want the best GEAR OIL possible that you can use as TRANSMISSION FLUID, use NEO synthetic RHD..IT is by far the best gear oil sold to the public that I have used and I have used many different types..It is not great for cold weather and will take 5 min driving time until it warms up but once it does it cannot be beat period.. buy it at www.bakerprecision.com but I will warn you it is pricey..

Could you go into detail about what you did? any pics?

paulmp3. My car is actually still in the shop waiting for more parts, Ill try to get a ride over there later this week and get some pics on my soon to be bullet proof tranny

Yeah..I did....that's what I read for the 4 hours that I waited while they took my car off the truck, prepped & washed it! Lotsa good info in there....I think some people may be surprised! LOL! :D

Believe me I usally do read the manuals....but it's kind of hard to read that info when half of your manual is missing!!!! Damn Courtesy Mazda is supposed to get me a new one and i'm still waiting for it!!

So what needed to be welded on the MSP diff?? I'm buying one sometime soon here and before I put it in I'll want it to be robust since I'll be running a LOT of power and racing auto-x and road courses quite a bit.

Thanks!

Cool man, i wanna see some pics and if you could get details on what is being done to "bullet proof" it. Start a thread up in the performance section explaining what was done. A bunch of people have been talking about building a bullet proof tranny, but no info has been given of what needs to be done.

What does that tranny fluid cost? Either one that was mentioned...I should probably do mine.

Im going to the shop tomorrow since they finally got the tranny and all other parts in. Should have pics up by friday.

You don't even need LSD additive for our differential. LSD additive is for differentials that have wet clutches in them so they will not chatter during tight low speed turns. Our differentials do not have clutches. I believe they work like Torsen differentials in that they limit slip by means of worm and ring gears, not clutches.
Not tryin to bust ya here...but thats wrong. I put in different tranny oil back last year and i started fetting what sounded like a bad axel noise coming from the front. I drained the fluid out and put in some redline synthetic with the additive and the sound disappeared instantly.

No offense, but you could have experienced something else unrelated that switching fluids alleviated. That can happen. From what I know of the diff's JFW is correct I believe. But at the same time I don't know a ton about the MSP diff just yet. But it doesn't not have clutches from my understanding so should not need an additive. Also, most of the redline fluids already have a bit of an additive in them, so adding an additional additive is typically unnecessary unless you are doing a fair bit of racing or loading the diff with more power.

The Redline already came with the LSD additive in it. I could be wrong, just going by what i experienced

Yes, I believe the redline has the additive in it :)

I don't doubt you got the results you did at all! I was just saying you couldn't indicate the JFW was wrong with his statements based off of your experiences. Make sense or I just confuse the issue more?

Guys... your OEM transmission oil does not contain an LSD additive.

The Super LSD (limited-slip differential) from Tochigi Fuji Sangyo KK includes a core clutch developed to work well with the strut suspension found in front-wheel-drive vehicles. The unit also works well in the front axle of four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles. Compared to other torque-sensing LSDs, the Super LSD has a lower torque bias ratio (1.5-2.0), which fits well with front suspension systems. Production costs are lower because of similarities to open differentials, and the device can be lubricated with standard differential fluid or ATF. The system can easily replace open differentials because it uses many of the same components and features identical installation points. The device provides good handling and control as well as a cost reduction.

which typically have friction modifiers relative to gear oil which is what a 75w90 is. The coefficient of friction needs to typically be reduced I believe from what I've been reading... redline's website explains it somewhat I think.

But I still don't know whether or not that means the MSP diff needs it... I'm just pointing out what I know/have read up this point. If someone has a good solid piece of info, much like DistantTea presented.. that'd be awesome.

Since overall, this isn't an expensive maintainence(sp?) project, which would I be better off going with? Does the most expensive = the best product?
