Looking at buying a MSP and want advice? Post here!

these cars will last a while if they arent beat on, so i would look for one that is stock or close to it. if you have the supporting mods you can make 200whp no problem.

Hey guys, first time poster here on the forums, im a bit more active on m****************, and focaljet.com

A few months ago, i rolled my 2000 focus ZX3, and while shopping around, i nearly bought a MSP, unfortunately, while waiting on loan stuff, it was purchased by somebody else. So I ended up with an 05 Mazda 3i. The 3 is a good car, but its just not for me, tons of little qirks here and there just drive me nutz. The sound system is horrid, nothing works unless the key is in the ignition in the on position, and its the car is really heavy for 146hp. All of this can be changed with mods i know, but id rather get a car that has the power im after then try to build this one.. I may eventually Auto-X with it.

Anyhow, im looking at MSPs, my roomate has a MS3, and i love driving it, but I dont need quite that much power. Everything ive seen available has about 60-70k miles on it in the range of 9-10.5k, and im a bit concerned. A few sources have mentioned that the MSP engines are notorious of grenading around that mileage. Im looking to get one, but I want to make sure that thats more myth then fact. I am looking to push it over the 200hp barrier, so i want to make sure the car is solid before i do that.

Ive looked at other cars (WRX, Redline, etc) but the Protege is the most attractive to me, any advice is greatly appreciated.

If u plan to autoX, MSP' are great cars for long term Autoxin or even for begining, they forgive alot :)

Yea, a friend of mine had one for a short while, when he first started with his protege, i took him out to willow springs, and drove him in his car round the track for a bit. (my foci had some mods, ive got time auto-xin with it.)
I put that car sideways plenty of times, and it never gave me one complaint. In contrast, the first and last time my focus went sideways, it ended in a spectacular roll that was movie-worthy. (Deer Avoidance - pix on request)

As for the MSP, are there any signs i should check for while looking around? I heard something about checking the spark plugs for detonation.. but thats about it. As for the Stock factor, is there a way to tell if the car has been modded, then reverted back to stock for the sale?

So, I'm looking for a MSP. Here are some links to the ONLY ones I have found within 200 miles of me. Looking to buy one of them so your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I'd be weary of that last one you posted. It's got a lot of mods and some pretty ugly non-stock rims in my opinion. But with all those mods, you never know how the previous owner treated it. You can always take the car for a ride and see how it runs or to a shop for an inspection, but you'll still never find out how the previous owner treated it. You could get 5 miles away from the dealer and the turbo take a crap on you. Wouldn't be good. I'd try to find one as close to stock as possible. Just my .02 cents.

if i could give my best advice....dont buy one....save money and get an evo

Better yet.......the 09 Sti. (2thumbs) But neither of them compare to the cost of an MSP. Especially if you get one that wasn't abused and treats you well.

Hello I'm a newbie who's been looking around the forums. I'm looking at buying an MSP 2003.5 yellow. I seems like a fun car but I've heard bad things about engines needing to be rebuilt and multiple turbo replacements as well as poor gearboxes on the. I'm only 19 and going in to college so I wont have much cash to mod it but maybe a replacement for the SMIC to boost the power a little

the is the car in question is at 55k miles for $8000 i haven't got a chance to look at it yet.

Is the car reasonably reliable? i plan on treating it better than my 98k mile mk3 jetta but the protege does seem like it might be pretty fragile

looking for advice on getting an msp

I am looking into getting an msp, and wanted to do some research before I buy one. Are there any notorious problems I should look for when test driving one of these? Do you guys have any common problems or are they pretty relilable? As far as performance goes, I have been reading some of the stickies and posts around here to try and get some info. I think for my first few mods I would do cai, exhaust, upgraded smic, bov. Does that sound pretty good or are there other things I should do first like charge pipe or anything? Any info would be great, thanks.

find a stock one or one thats close to stock. these cars can be reliable if they are not abused. upgrade the ic and exhaust and you will have a fun car. just dont get greedy with the boost

Common problems/fixes..

1. Wastegate Actuator usually will need replaced eventually.
2. Limited Slip Differential may give out, welding it will help.
3. Clean the EGR valve if your idle gets funky.
4. Don't up the boost too much unless you plan to rebuild your engine.
5. The rods in these engines give out easily.
6. Find some type of EMS if you're doing mods, a SS AFC works well.
7. You may have the "clunk" so when you hear it, that's what it is.
8. Don't let any mechanic touch it unless they know what a MSP is or unless they actually know what they are doing with a car that has forced induction.

I'll add more if I can think of anything else..

oh god is that sooooo true.....

JUST BUY ONE and then BUY PARTS and after a year of hard work and a lot of money youll have a sweet ride, hard work and a lot of money but a rare breed. you can make a protege look and run like a MSP but a true MSP has a MSP VIN#

GET ONE!!!

LOL tell me about it.. I have over $12K in just parts.. not even including the cost of the car itself. Selling it now though, I'm burnt out on paying a monthly car payment now ironically, taking up my old hobby of showing horses, so now I'm trading my car payment in for the monthly cost of boarding a second horse at the barn.

Still trying to get my hands on msp

First off, thanks for all the advice and input you guys have. Pretty cool forum atmosphere here. And i want to be a real member!! haha

anyways, i found another msp, on the other side of my state though.. o well

But he said his car hydro locked going over the pass once. So he replaced it with a factory 2.0l , and says he has 6k worth of paper work for it.

Its got 48k miles on it and the carfax is clean.. and its YELLOW!!

Planning on taking to mechanic to have them check it out.

Any thoughts?
