ok the dealer is really jerking me around and it's getting me pissed off.

First, the GPS system is DVD based! DOes it or does it NOT play DVD movies?

Second, dealer says they can't order/replace JUST the LCD screen, they would have to order the whole system if the screen broke.

That seems like a ton of BS!

Does anyone have the GSP system and can confirm question 1 and also can someone give me a PART number off the lcd screen? or at the least some dimension specs.

I want to install my own lcd screen for other video stuff but I want a starting point.

side note:
Is anyone interested in buying my 6 CD changer? 2 months old and its only played one CD. (works fine, no problems at all)

Or if someone is willing to trade me for an MP3 player? (lol2)

Your dealer is not BSing you. The NAV is DVD based, but there are many DVD formats and the NAV system's format is different than the DVD's we watch. And no, as of this time, no-one has hacked the Mazda system to make it play DVD movie formats.

Your dealer is also right in that the NAV screen is connected to the DVD system (in terms of replacements). It's a long story that I don't even know all the details about, and lots of legal/insurance reasons around it.

I'm sorry but I work in the technology field building computers and such and very little of that reply jives.

I'm NOT calling you a liar or anything but I'm having a hard time believing all of it.

True, there ARE several different types of DVD formats and not all players can read all formats but that doesn't mean you can't switch players.

which brings me to my second gripe, that the Screen is indivisible from the player. THIS has to be wrong!!! Unless the wires are soldered onto the screen AND the player, then one can be disconnected from the other!

I'm sure mazda, just to be PITA, used proprietary plugs and such nonsense but the fact remains that they have to come apart to be Installed!

You say "it's a long story that you don't even know all the details about", well I'd love to hear it or read it somewhere. You must of heard/read it somewhere, so point me in the right direction.

Also, I don't see here anywhere that you mention you HAVE the GPS system plus you say your from Canada where the system isn't SOLD!!! So where is your INFO coming from???

Please remember this is not a personal attack. I like to have facts to back up statements that tell me I can't have/do something to something I OWN!

Also maybe you can tell me if this picture has something to do w/ the GSP system.

the control panel next to the gear shift, is that to control the screen?

It's Mine and I F it UP if I want to! ;)

Yes, that is the NAV control panel.

I've read in more than one place that nobody has been able to get any Mazda NAV DVD players to play movies. I'm sure somebody knows why but the fact still remains that it hasn't been done... yet.

You could be the first and then enlighten the rest of the huddled masses.

When I said in my earlier post "the NAV screen is connected to the DVD
system (in terms of replacements)" - I meant that from an
insurance/legal/liability perspective, not the physical unit itself. Because of how these systems can be used, there's a lot of legal issues around it (which includes giving authorization for replacements). This is also why it's practically impossible for anyone who wants to retrofit a non-NAV Mazda3 to get the Mazda3 NAV components from a dealer.

cloudycloud, your post is like going up to a person with a gun, shooting
them execution-style, and then saying 'I am not a murderer'. The action is
completely opposite to what that person says - and actions speak louder
than words. You say it wasn't a personal attack, but your post clearly
indicates so.

I know that you just want the facts (I'm the same way). However, the
attitude in which you've tried to get these facts is not the most effective
way of getting others to help you get what you desire. Sorry, but I highly
doubt you'll see me responding to any more of your questions - too bad
really, I'm sure many members on this board will vouch that I've brought
incredible insight to this vehicle (and Mazda overall).

On most cars with DVD navigation systems, someone eventually figures out how to play movies on it. Once that is done, I'm sure you will be able to read about it here.

About order the screen separate from the navi system...yeah it sounds crazy, but that's the way Mazda works. On the Proteges, if you break a needle on the gauge cluster while installing indiglo gauges or whatever, to fix it you have to order a entire new gauge cluster. The needles or separate gauges aren't sold separately.

You need to chip it!!!

Put a chip in it!!!

Probably the right answer. I just picked up my M3 5dr with Nav and the DVD box say's "<b>SDAL format</b>" what ever that is. Great display though, would be great with DVD video.
