Kunho Ecsta ASX

Need to snag some decently cheap tires pretty soon to replace the Potensucks that wore down way to quickly. Need all seasons since i live in the northeast and probably wont bother buying snows for the winter. Im also looking for something with good treadwear, hopefully to make up for the lost mileage on the stockers.

Never had Kumhos before so im not really familiar with how their UTQG stacks up against other companies' numbers, but this tire has a 420 rating so i should be able to push a few miles out of them.

Anyone have any input on these, or Kumhos in general?

also if anyone has Eagle GTs on their car, input would be appreciated. i know these tires have both been discussed in the past, but i was looking more for treadwear info, since the handling on most ultra-high perfs would be good enough to satisfy my driving style.

I get confused by the Kumhos because I thought there was an ASX UHP summer tire by that name too. Must be some slightly different name, I dunno.

Anyhow, a friend of mine put the all-season ASX on his turbo Focus this summer and is pleased so far. Can't speak to longevity but he likes the comfort and grip.

There's the AST (a "High Performance All-Season) and the ASX (an "Ultra High Performance All-Season).

The "A" is used to denote "all-season."

They also have an Ecsta SPT (where the "S" is used to denote "summer").

I've never used the ASXs on any of my own vehicles, but I have a buddy with a Focus that had a set and seemed to be very pleased with them.

The new Eagle GTs have been getting great reviews as well, and honestly from what I've read it seems like it might be the tire to beat nowadays in that category...

The ASX's are Ecstas too, that's what throws me for a loop. Why must models be named obscure alphanumeric ciphers that confuse me! Like CLK/RX350/G35/MKX. Ugh, lol.

Anyhow, which UHP summer Ecsta is it that's brand new? There used to be an S and now there's an X, or something... Supposed to be a good tire.

Yeah, "Ecsta" is what they use to denote the "sportier" tires that they sell (similar to Bridgestone's use of "Potenza"). They use "Solus" for their everyday passenger tires, and "Road Venture" for their off-road-oriented tires...

The Ecsta XS is the "brand new" one. They came out at the end of last summer.

I've got a set of 235/40s mounted on my RX-8 wheels right now.

After about 6-7K miles, they seem to be wearing on par with the OEM RE050As. Dry grip is waaaaaay better than the stock tires, and they do OK in the wet (though the more worn they get the more I have to be careful in the rain, of course)...

For they money, they're pretty hard to beat. (thumb)

Ecsta ASX's lack wet traction in my experience with them. That and they always had a tendency to squeal even when not under a heavy load... Spend $5-$10 more per tire and get toyo's or yokohamas. Proxes4's are like $5 more per tire and are a far superior tire IMO.

lol, you even defined the meaning of the Ecsta acronyms in your post above... i.e. A= all season and S= summer

i have the asx and they drive fine i like them alot and the eagle gt tires come stock with the new caliber srt-4s..theyr alright

they make proxes 4's in 215-45-18? i had a set of them on my old celica and thought they were pretty good tires, but i havent seen them in that size.

Not sure, I have them in 215/45/17... Maybe 215/40/18 or 215/35/18 is probably a little bit more common. Just check Toyo's website.

yea i found them. i guess the sites i was looking at just didnt stock toyos. might have to look into them too.

I know they're not the ASX's, but I had a set of Kuhmo Ecsta AST's on another vehicle for just under 2 years & put over 30K miles on them. They were inexpensive & didn't give me any issues.

I had ASX's on my Integra GS-R. Really cheap at $60 a piece for 195/15/55's. Only had 1 bubble and live in NJ where the roads suck and have lots of potholes and hit lots of potholes. Traction was really good even in the snow.

I had Sumitomo's before the ASX's, not quite as strong a tire (replaced 4 of them from blowouts/bubbles) but actually had better snow traction than the ASX's.

I had about 45,000 miles on my ASX's before they started wearing down.
