Kia Adds Spectra5 Hatchback to Spectra Line
Kia took the wraps off the Spectra5, a sporty 5-door hatchback with aggressive styling. "The Spectra5 was built to be the sportiest Kia ever," said Peter Butterfield, president and chief executive officer of Kia Motors America.

The sporty styling includes an aggressive front end with a black mesh grille, blacked out headlights, a deep front spoiler, fog lights, rear valance, 8-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler. Interior styling has sport fabric on the seats and door panels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with perforated leather, metal-look trim, and metal pedals.

The Spectra5 offers best-in-class passenger room and cargo capacity larger than the previous 5-door Spectra. Six airbags are standard, including front-seat-mounted side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Power comes from a 138-horsepower 2.0-liter engine with a standard 5-speed manual transmission. The suspension is sport-tuned, and a strut tower brace is added for improved torsional rigidity, the first strut tower brace offered in a Kia. Standard equipment for the Spectra5 includes air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio system, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, heated outside mirrors, rear wiper, and a height-adjustable steering column. Spectra5 will go on sale in the U.S. during the summer of 2004.

IMO, the p5 looks better.
i agree that the P5 looks better also. but you got to admit both look very similar, and the Kia has more hp. i wonder if there is a retuned fs-de in that thing? if so aftermarket parts for the P5 would also work in the spectra5 and vice versa

Spectra 5... Optra 5... For me, the Protege5 brought the wagon industry to Canada..
i'm sick of seeing the new one called 5 too!

Mazda should have call the Mazda 3 sport... MAZDA 3.5!!

Kia is connected at the hip with Hundai, and has a small relationship with GM (the new Chevy Aveo is a Kia), so I don't think they would buy a Mazda model and re-badge it.

Car doesn't look half-bad, though. Not as pretty as the p5, but good. :)

Kia Rio and Sephia used Mazda B-series engines, but I guess this was before they worked with Hyundai or GM? Don't know for sure. (uhm)

2005 Kia Spectra5
Ten years after its debut in the American market with the Sephia compact sedan, Kia spices up its roots with an super sport wagon version of its highest volume model, the Spectra. In an attempt to revitalize and broaden the product line and continue its momentum upwards among the top-10 import brands in the United States, the Spectra5 sport wagon borrows its platform and powertrain from its cousin the Hyundai Elantra, but inherits most of its spiritual suspension DNA from the MazdaSpeed and Ford SVT performance tuner cars, having been designed by the same engineer. Spectra5's sport-tuned suspension rides on stiffer springs, firmer shocks, and larger anti-roll bars than the all-new-for-2004 Spectra sedan, and steps up to 16-inch alloy wheels and 205/50R16 Goodyears. Underhood is a spunky 138-horse/2.0-liter engine with continuously variable valve timing and multi-port fuel injection mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission or optional, electronically controlled four-speed automatic. Pricing will be announced when it goes on sale later this summer.

Ugh, drop the stupid jealousy.

It's a simple game - whoever makes a product last usually wins. When a manufacturer makes a product they look at the localized competition and then they make something which can be sold as a better product.

You could play the waiting game forever since the next will always be better, enjoy your P5 - it's a very nice wagon.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...me no likey. P5 looks better still. and i can't believe that actually did the same naming strategy ! gayness...Protege5 > Spectra5

the aveo is a Daewoo, not a Kia. Kia/Hyundai are partnered, Daewoo was their korean rival.

i'd be happy if they took the p5 design and modified the exterior slightly and kept everything else the same. it would be nice if the p5 could live on even if it was a kia
