Kenwood sucks..damn speed deck

go here... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat17700050111&type=category

search for KDCMP919. I think the parts are on page 14. it's a simple process. you just have to remove 3 screws on the front and then open up the radio so that you can plug it in inside. The recommend you buy the connector end as well. all in all it shouldn't cost more than 25 bucks to fix the radio with these parts. if you are electronically inclined at all you shouldn't have any trouble with it

Ive owned 3 kenwood HUs in every car ive owned. (More recent, within the last 3 years) Each one worked when I sold the car, and the 25th anniv. I have now, I like better than my pioneer 860mp. I have had zero problems with kenwoods, and nothing but problems with pioneers. Each pioneer deck I have had has always had problems fully ejecting a CD, I had to sit and finger **** it to get it out, got really annoying. Only one of my friends has a pioneer that hasnt had that problem. My moms kenwood messed up recently, it wouldnt turn on, disconnected it, and connected it. done and done works perfectly now.

^^^you may have no problems but this particular headunit is prone to this failure. Its a known failure actuallly and despite your good sucess you can't deny that fact. Kenwood knows this deck is bad. The only reason a recall isn't issued is because its not worth it for them. Think about all the MP919s out there. Every Protege MP3 and ever Mazdaspeed had one. not to mention the ones they sold off the shelf. If they do a recall then they have to replace all of them. Whereas now they are only replacing the ones that ppl ask about. a lot of people don't even bother with it. they just buy something else even tho it can be replaced. It's all about Cost Analysis and s***. I'm glad you are having good success with Kenwood but the fact that this radio has a problem is undeniable. And unlike you I have never had 1 problem from a Pioneer unit. Nothing is perfect man

Sounds like your probably going trhough 1 kenwood per yer. Keep in mind the MSPs are older then that now so the common problems with the radios design has had time to degrade. Hell you could buy any POS radio and so long as you got a new one every six months or stuck them in cars that got little use, they would appear to last forever. Put one in a car that gets 15,000 miles of use a year for 3 years and let me know how its going.

Also, it is not all kenwoods that are this bad, anything without a motorized face plate will be fine. Well, atleast better.

THe MP3 didn't come with them, they came with a Z919 or 828.
Kenwood did sell alot of the MP919s though and circuit city hated themselves for doing it as a bajesus of them came back for warrenty repairs. This was and is a problem for most motorized kenwood units.

currently have two non mazda owner friends .. both w/after market kenwood head units... and both with burnt out displays...

kenwood = garbage

sorry for all your mishaps... that sucks the teabag (nuts)

I didn't have a motorized Kenwood and had just one problem with it, but I think with an inherent design, it also happend with the motorized face ones. I had a MP828(first KW with MP3) and had the DMASK, after about a year and a half, the ribbon cable partially broke, leaving me with no control over the radio, it would just sit and play and you couldn't change jack. After 100 bucks and a new cable, it seemed to be fine before I sold it with my previous car.

Dmask is a motorized face, it needs a little "motor" to flip itself around.

wasn't there DMASK, which had the push button (like my old MP828), and DMASK+, which was motorized (which the MSP radio has)?

THere may have been.
If you had to completely manualy flip the face around by hand, then yes but if you hit a button and it flipped it self around, then it was motorized.

If anyone wants to fix these HU's by themselves, PM me. Ive done about 4 of them now so its pretty easy for me to help someone out.

I'm getting my new (refurb) unit installed Wednesday (10-12-05). I lost my spectrum analyzer. The unit works fine otherwise.

Please provide a few more details on the "Do It Yourself" repair. Has anyone actually done it. Is it diff for someone with some electronics knowledge?

The refurb unit is in. The first time I started the car (after I left the dealer) it flipped 1/2 way and locked up. (first) I reset it and so far its been OK.(deadhorse
