Keeping the Si???

That's a bummer...

What about looking at a used one? We were looking at some Subie wagons on AutoTrader online and found a really nice one (manual, nice shape) for about 15k...

yeah i wasn't planning on getting a new forester, you should look into the used ones. The 2.5xts or what ever, the fast ones, go for about 18K.

Problem is that all of the negative won't roll into a cheaper car. '08 Forester XT with a $30k sticker makes $6k in negative disappear relatively easily. '05-06 Forester XT with $18k value not so much. Most car loans will only go up to 120% loan-to-value, and we were right up against that, even paying invoice minus holdback for the new one.

I'm going to suck it up and drive the Avalanche until we are at least rid of the Jeep. We're way upside down on that too, so we can't really get rid of it. 15 months left on the lease, and then we've got an extra $500/month freed up between the payment and insurance. That'll go a long way toward a new car.

you think you might learn something from this...or your wife might have sime insight working for a dealer...buying a new car is the biggest mistake ever. They lose soooo much value so as you drive them off the lot and unless you pay large payments every month there is no way you can keep from going upside down. And leasing is the dumbest idea ever...thats like taking a bundle of money and tossing it into the fire

no, heavily modding a lease is the dumbest idea ever. Good thing we don't know anybody ever dumb enough to do that.

Couldn't be more wrong. Can't stick a couple dogs in the trunk of a 6.

Well, you could! .... ;)Just out of curiosity:
1. How big are these dogs?
2. How often do you drive them places?
3. Were you hauling them in the back seat of the Avalanche, or in the bed?

...anyway, I know you were looking for something to haul kid, kid stuff and dogs, but if these are big dogs, you're not getting them in the hatch space of a Forester with much kid stuff anyway!

Just thinkin'...

Not everybody here fills up a minivan with their kids bed room when they go to the beach Eric. Most are content with a couple toys and an inflatable raft.

1. The dogs range from 3 lbs to 80 lbs.
2. Not as often as I used to, but not as often as I should be either. Having a yard has made me a lazy dog owner.
3. They have been travelling in the back seat, but with a baby in the back seat, that wouldn't be a good idea. We'd probably strap a crate in the bed or something.

Part of the reason I was trying to get out of the Avalanche is that it really isn't that great for the baby/dog/stuff job. Living things in the bed of a truck are not a great idea, generally, IMO. I might buy a crate designed to go in the back of a truck, but I'm not sure how often I'll need that.

No, buying a new car and then trying to get out of it within a year of buying it--twice--is the biggest mistake ever. There's no problem with buying a new car and keeping it for 5 or 6 years.

Generally, though, buying a slightly used car is a better option. However, since my wife worked at a dealer in finance she understands how the banking side of things works, and knows that you can't get a big advance on a used car.

She also understands that leasing is a good way to make $10,000 in negative disappear in 48 months. Financed on a new car for 60 months with an average interest rate, that would increase the payment by $200/month. Also, leasing is good if you want a new car often. If you actually work out the numbers on a lease, it is basically the same cost as a purchase. Purchasing a depreciating asset is a worse idea than leasing one, in general.

Seriously, a stroller (other than the crappy, too-short-to-walk-with, tippy, sketchy umbrella-type) is frickin' huge, and even folded, would not leave room in the hatch of a Forester for an 80 lb dog. That's why I asked.

You might be surprised. There's a surprising amount of room back there. Short of a Tahoe, there's not much that's going to give you much more room. It's pretty comparable to our Grand Cherokee.

My mom has one for her Explorer sport trac. I'm sure you can get one for the Av.
