Kartboy SS install question

I installed by Kartboy SS and bushing about a week ago. Now when I shift it takes more effort shifting, especially 1st and 2nd. I was thinking either I tightend the bolt to much, didn't apply enough grease on the bolt, it'll smooth out over time or that's the way it is. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't mind it but my girlfriend gets a sore arm from driving. :)

That's typical... since you've shortened the throw, it's gonna take more pressure to get it into gears. Don't worry, about a few days or weeks, it will be fine (not as easy as stock though, but a lot easier then when you first install it).

Happy shifting!!!

Sorry to be a pain in the ass mod, but we are trying to clean up all the forums to make it easier to search for items, and less cluttered. In the future, please post in the appropriate forum...example - Intakes, dispite being for the Protege5, belong in the performance section. Buying a carbon fiber hood for your Protege5 belongs in the Appearance section. If you raced someone in your Protege5 it still belongs in the Racing/Motorsports section. If you have any questions, comments, or complaints, feel free to PM me at any time.

Thanks again for your patience as we clear up the forums to make it better for you!

off to performance

Give it some time to break in. It will get smoother.... I also switched over to Red-Line tranny fluid.

i did my kartboy the other night..i dont know how to do the bushings though..help? yea..the throw is a little tougher..but all and all..its so worth it

i did my install this morning,it feels great and all, but in first and second gear i get this rattling noise really bad, what could it be?
In neutral its quiet, third quiet, fourth quiet, 5th quiet, and reverse quiet, but in 1st and 2nd it rattles, what is the problem?

Spicy, I had trouble with the bushings, too. The bushings are installed up under the tranny, not under the shifter. Follow the (getting technical here, pay attention:)), bar that goes from the shifter to the transmission. See the Black rubber bushing on the end of it? lol, I looked everywhere for a place to put those things before I finally found the spot.

Just cut out the old black rubber one with a knife, and install the two urethane ones where it was. It much easier to install the new ones than to get the old one off...just cut the damn thing in half and pull it out with some pliers.(rockon)

Anthony, Did you give the heatshield a tug when you installed the KB? If so, you may need to get in there and grease the crap out of the pivot-ball.

whoa whoa whoa, why cut the stock bushings when you can keep em if the need ever arise for them?

you'll see the bar go towards the front of the car from where you installed the SS under the car, where it ends in a circle that has a metal middle section, 2 rubber sections then big ass washers and a nut.

untighten nut and take off, wiggle bar off of bolt(this may require pushing the metal sleeve back onto the bolt as you push the buchings off, doesnt matter you will have to take it out anyway)

Once it is off the bolt and the metal sleeve in the middle is out take the whole thing and push it against the bolt just outside where the hole is in the middle, like your pushing it out. This takes some brute force btw but im a skinny fukk and did alright. since its rubber as you pushing that side will push into the end of the metal rod and out the other side, no cutting or damage needed to the OEM bushing, it just flexes back into shape.

Now put one wahser on, then one KB bushing(well greased, silicone grease), then the rod so the first bushing squeezes into place(takes some alignment), then the 2nd bushing also greased and the 2nd washer, tighten nut and your done.

there is an excellent tutorial on this somwhere, ill see if I can find it. and no not the TWM one, it sucks =P

edit: oh yah dumb ass me, it is on kartboy's site, lol.

notice pics 3 and 4 where he pushes the old bushings out.

oh yah, i did mine 2 days ago on my p5, went smooth, just like i described above for the bushings and the SS wasnt too hard, took me an hour with breaks since it was like 105 out.

really notchy right away but will get a little better eventually, honestly I really like the extra effort and the extreme notchy feeling, makes it a very tight gate feeling and it feels more responsive.

I also did my circle earth ground wire kit same day, grounded everything and its mother, lol, seems to ride a little nicer now =)

eibach pro kit tomorrow and estimates on custom fabbed header/exhaust combo.

i'll try that in the morning, that snap ring was a pain in the ass though. I'll try the heat shield first, if that doesnt work then got to buy some grease

thanks for the help guys.
i've been busy at the shop playing with the EVO the past few weeks.

try the heatshield and make sure the shifter is good and lubed up. i recomend the white lithium grease from the parts store. a small tube will last a long time.

Happy shifting
Tom

well is aw someone recommend silicone grease, only one I could find made of silicone was a 2dollar bulb grease tub, kinda a clear grease. Seems to work fine for me.....btw I LOVE the notchy true shift feeling from the SS and bushings, u definately know when ur in gear and so forth and the throw is quite short. seriously makes any shifting feel sporty.

I think i didnt lube it, when i was reading earlier posts about the shifter install, somebody mentioned that the only short shifter that needed to lubed was the B&M. So i didnt lube ou the shifter at all. I'll try that tomm,
by the way great product Tom!!!!
Whats the price for the bushing shipped to texas 76706?

all that info is on their site.

like in his sig.
www.kartboy.com

what I did with the shifter is lightly grease the ball, and replace the stock grease on the bushings on the shifter.

then for the bishings down near the tie, I greased both yellow bushings fairly well on all surfaces except the outer most edge.

im really gettin used to it now, thats how shifting should be.

Hey guys... I didn't lube my bushings because someone earlier said we didn't have to? Any ideas on this? You think maybe I'm hearing a clunking noise because of this when I drive?

You're hearing a clunking when driving? or shifting? or what? The only clunk the SS could cause is the bottom of the lever hitting the heat shield if the heat shield was not bent down enough. (Don't bend it down too far, though, or you'll cause vibration against your exhaust line.)

And are you talking about the bushings at the transaxle? You should grease the pivot ball at the lever, but even this wouldn't cause a clunk.

Sorry, clunk isn't a good word.. it's more of a rattling when I'm accelerating and I don't think it's the heat shield cause I've already bent and put washers there. I think it has to do with the bushings vibrating? Some other people had this in mind too, so I don't know what it is...

Rattling when accelerating = heat shield

Mine did this for a while till I found a good spot for it
