Just muffler replacement?

I've read a number of posts about the Magnaflow cat-back kit... I was just wondering, has anyone tried replacing "just" the mufflers with flowmasters or some other muffler brand?

Is there something special about the whole cat-back kit? I had a Mustang GT a few years ago, I replaced the stock mufflers with flowmasters, everything was fine.

Thanks.

polished stainless, larger diameter, smoother transitions, more than likely lighter weight, a nice increase in power, and if paired with a downpipe will make even more sense. i have the magnaflow on my speed six, got it for a steal, $390 bucks, fits like a glove, doesn't burn the plastic on the bumper as so many may claim, and sounds real discrete. don't know what else I can tell you. check out my post on it.
