Mazda Protege 5
Hey all. I'm new to the board and am looking for some info on mods. I've looked around a bit, but can't find what I'm looking for. I remember seeing something on getting rid of the butterflies in the intake manifold for better intake flow. I basically want to open up the intake and exhaust for better power and better mileage. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before.

don't get rid of the butterflies, you will lose some torque at worst or you won't gain anything at best

as far as intakes and exhausts go... well use the search Luke

or there's always http://protege5online.com

The butterflies wont really do much , and there are alot of downsides to doing it. Go to corksport.com they would have the best parts and info for you.

Thanks for the quick responses and links. It's a 2002 with 47000 miles on it. We got it for a family car. The PO put on lowering springs, removed the resonator and installed a fart can muffler with a 5" tip. It's dark blue and has the roof rack and silver wheels. I can post a photo later. I want to go back to stock springs and a nice quiet exhaust on the highway instead of the drone and bumpy ride. One of the reasons I joined the board is to find someone who has some stock springs laying around they would be willing to part with. Either that or I can do some kind of trade for the ones that are on the car. I'm very happy with the car.

one thing you may want to check on the exaust is if he replaced the stock one with an axleback or a catback. It may not be as simple as putting back on a stock axleback. If the stock pipes are intact however, I may have a stock "sport" exaust for sale. It's the same muffler as stock, but it has a slightly larger tip (but not quite as big as the mazdaspeed).

Also, do you know what springs the PO put on it?

I've got some stock springs laying around, they have some rust on them...if you want em just pay shipping, they're kinda heavy.

On the exhaust, he just had the resonator cut out and a piece of pipe welded in with a straight through muffler welded on in place of the stocker. Basically the exhaust system has only been molested from where the stock resonator was back.

On the springs, I'm definitely interested. Please hold them for me. I grew up in the Houston area and still have family in Clear Lake.

Thanks for the friendly responses, guys.

Oh yeah, I'm not sure what springs are on the car. I'll post it when I get a chance to look.

I have a stock P5 muffler available for purchase- it has approx 3k miles on it- just let me know if you are interested in buying it...
