2012 Mazda CX-9 Touring AWD
Hi everyone I just got a new CX-9 touring and so far I love it, a lot nicer than my 02 Odyssey. I just have one question so far, is there any break-in period for this car? Thanks!

I usually drive them as smoothly as possible until the first oil change. And park them in no-mans land, far from other vehicles. ;-)

Placing some cardboard under your car will help identify any sources of leaks. It's good to find these early.

If you have the power liftgate, use it often and check if it needs calibration. Windows and mirrors as well.

Keep an eye on your tires air pressure. (Mine was low in all 4). But don't watch the mpgs on your trip computer, it will just depress you. (hand)

Ok thanks. Do you recommend doing the 1st oil change at 7500 like the book says?

Every 3-4K, during the 1st couple years, or as long as the car is under warranty. The first 2 changes may be the most important. (The dealer did mine free)

Lots of good debates on the "science vs psychology" of oil changes here on the forum. Keep your head low and watch the sparks fly. ;-)

BTW, my 2012 just had its birthday, and is still in "PERFECT CONDITION". Like New. (birthday) The Pearl White ages really well.

Was your area impacted by the storm?

I just bought my wife a '12 CX-9 GT yesterday. Traded in her '04 Honda Ody EX-L RES. I love the way the CX-9 handles compared to the Ody! I actually like driving her car now. FWIW, the dealer just told us not to use cruise control until the first oil change. That was the extent of their break-in information. Most modern vehicles/engines are made with materials and tolerances that don't require the type of break-in procedures some of us more 'mature' drivers remember from a while back. I would try and stay away from taking an extended drive with steady RPM right away, and change the oil early the first time to get rid of the assembly lube they use when the assemble the engine. Shouldn't need much more than that.

Yeah I got hit by Sandy, we also had a few smaller snow storms but they were nothing. Sandy didn't affect the little town I live in, but everywhere around me was hit really bad. I was really lucky. They have almost 10,000 wrecked cars stored close to my house form the storm. Friends of mine closer to the water were out of power for almost 2 weeks and were evacuated for about a week. My lights never went out and there was one tree down in the neighborhood across from mine.

Congrats on the new car. We like the way it drives better than the odyssey too and I hope its just as reliable.

It's funny isn't it? When we first got the Ody back in '04, we thought it handled surprisingly well for a minivan. Now the CX-9 makes the Ody seem like we were driving an ice cream truck. We're still trying to figure out all the functions, LOL.

Same here. We moved from Mercury Villager to Ody. That was night and day difference.
Now that we have owned the CX9 for 5 years, this one drives like a sedan. Any SUV that can pull more than 0.8g is respectable at corner. Not to mention the 37ft curb-to-curb turning circle (like Accord and Camry). 7.6sec 0-60mph and top notch reliability (on par with a Pilot according to CR). (cheers2)

LOL I thought the odyssey handled well for a minivan too. It was either that or the sienna or quest for me because consumer reports rated them as the most reliable and not only was the odyssey the nicest in the interior and exterior design, it also handled the best, and now I think I can say the same thing about the CX-9 just based off of what people have said and reviews, although I didn't test drive any other midsize SUV.

I bought a 2012 CX-9 GT in November and just had the first oil change last Thursday at 3,400 miles. Going forward, I plan to change it every 5-6k, I don't think I can cope (psychologically) with going any longer than that! Besides, it is FAR better to change it a little too soon rather than a little too late. =)

One other maintenance item that I want to mention is Transmission Fluid. The Owner's Manual claims that it is "Lifetime" Fluid that never needs to be changed. This is becoming a very common trend in the auto industry, but most mechanics disagree. They say what it really means is that it will outlast the Powertrain Warranty, not the lifetime of the car! My rule has always been to change ATF every 30k and I've never had any problems. Actually, I had a '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a transmission that was notorious for early failure with as few as 60k miles on them. My mechanic had never seen one make it to 150k miles.....mine had 221k miles on it when I sold it and I'm he (mechanic) is convinced it was because I changed the fluid and filter every 30k miles....

Just my two cents...

Not just trans fluid, I change the brake fluid and coolant every three years also. I think your right about the manufacturers being primarily concerned with the warranty period and not the longevity of the vehicle. I don't trust the 100K mile claims for spark plugs either.
