Jeff's MSP GTR Build

Right now, I want to test out the G series. My trans is fully built, i.e. complete PAR gear set with both shafts on needle bearings, quaife diff, double synchros, etc... So by the end of this week, early next week the car should be tuned with the AEM, sometime in the next two weeks I will be installing the rear assembly with diff, and I am not sure on the timeline for the AWD G series box. I have 3 to play with though.

now this is something I've been looking for sometimes, will MSP tranny be incorporated with AWD from GTR ? if so I'm on the right path then :)

BTW- that toyo tranny is muthaF* big compared to our G series tranny .

I think he is just saying he has a built MSP transmission for now and in the future will convert to awd using one of his 3 gtx or gtr transmissions, not that he is using the msp trans for awd.

too bad he has an fs and not a bp if he is going awd as the awd toyota drivetrain is prettydamn tuff. dont see how a gtx or gtr trans could survive much abuse from a built FSDET.

If I go nuts of something after getting the FWD sorted I think I will be looking into AWD eventually myself using the toyota awd setup from the celica as it fits the adaptor i have. here is a pic from a guy in the lower hemisphere doing the toyota drivetrain swap into a gtx or gtr cant remember which.

well no matter what I do the escort GT radiator either comes into contact with the crossmember I made if i mount it low or the hood if I mount it higher because of the stupidly high mounted radiator cap. seeing as how I need a hood I am out of options for the egt rad.

now I am deciding on whether or not to pick up a protege5 radiator or a stupid civic rad. the pro5 radiator may be too thick as the escort gt rad is very slim which is why i was trying to use it as the turbo is far away from the block with the miata manifold. the civic rad is still an option but would look very dumb in the engine bay as its a half rad and very small and would require a long rad hose from one side of the bay to the other.

other than the radiator I dont see any other issues. I put the car back together for the most part. I ended up mounting the drivetrain in such as way that I just reused the stock msp linkage without cutting it up. the mounts for the BP motor on the passenger side ended up ~9 inches farther back than that of the FSDE mounting point so I did a little fandangling with a medieval FSDE mount flipped and then extended towards the firewall with a piece of rectangular steel.

the escort gt clutch slave mated perfectly to the MSP clutch line.
with the positioning of the trans the shift gate in the car is a little farther down then the stock msp. for example shifting to 1st puts the shifter slightly lower back than 1st with the FSDE trans. luckily going into 2/4/r doesnt smack the shifter in the base either, in fact it oddly enough feels like a "tighter" pattern than the fsde transmission shift layout.
either way I can cycle throw all gears smoothly without issue. Reverse is very easy to engage.

Once the drivetrain was properly lined up I was also able to get the proper amount of trans fluid in the trans which is good cause now I know it is level good enough to not worry.

so ya, sort out the radiator issue, add a turbo drain, twist some wires together and turn the key..

on wednesday i am supposed to be at a toprotege.com club meet to get the rad. the turbo oil drain i think I am just going to make out of copper piping from home depot with saab rubber connectors on either end from the original saab turbo oil drain.

I also picked up a 10" slim fan. Its pretty small but without AC or PS and living in toronto canada I dont think it will be an issue. Temperature hardly ever gets over 25 in the summer and with no load on the engine from the lack of accessories I think it will be ok. If not then I will spend another $25 and get a second fan. either way the next 4 months will be temps around freezing so the fan sure wont be working hard regardless.

I also had to use new lines to hook up the heater core. wasnt an issue but figured I should mention it.

the stock fsde throttle cable also sits high and hits the hook when I close it as it is mounted vertically to the suzuki ITBs on my custom manifold. A few zip ties later and it is now a non-issue. I spent a good 20 mins with the right foot going WOT to no throttle to make sure the linkage is good and solid and wont come apart. hard to believe the little springs keep everything together tight, but they do. I hope I dont ever lose one as they would be a pain to find the proper spring again.

25degrees Jeff? Did you sleep through (or forget) about those multi-days mid-30* heatwaves? (40+ with humidex)? (sleep)

I mean, the build sounds awesome! :D

And the best part of it all? It's a Spicy! Awesome build keep up the fast and amazing work, I hope it all works out and runs well for you. The ITB setup is unique to say the least.

i didnt forget that was for like 2 days out of the year and I still dont see it being an issue.
and considering the car doesnt have AC anymore I doubt I would drive it in the heat on those 2 days a year anyway. I bought a chevy malibu for daily driving. It is a certified couch on wheels with granny steering and industrial air conditioning perfect for getting through the longest commute in north america everyday (yes worse than LA and New York, you guys have it luckey down south our road system is retarded, GTA has worst commute in NA by far I spent 2 hours a day driving to and from work lol)

We had a few more then that (at least up here we did), but I was just yanking your chain a little :P
How long (roughly) until you try turning it over for the 1st time?

well if i didnt care about running the water pump dry and stuck on a temp oil drain i could do it right now i guess.

if i get the rad on wednesday then shortly after i guess. I will have to piece together some rad hoses as the routing will have to clear my oil drain and 3" downpipe but it shouldnt be too bad I will see what I can makeshift with stuff lying around my garage.

btw i see you are in ottawa next time I am up there with my speed we should meet up for a tims or something.

you know that main strip in your downtown with all the bars and outdoor patios? my work has like 80% of all businesses on that strip running our software for their point of sale bar computers and cash registers etc. so I will be up there quite a bit next summer. we also have almost all the golf courses in the area running our software. I went 3 or 4 times this year setting up network and computer infrastructure for the office we have there now and I will be doing alot of work with them over next summer.

Looking forward to hearing it (vids NEEDED!) :)

I'm going to guess you are talking about Elgin Street or York Street (or any of the streets in the Byward market TBH). Cool beans about your business having so many clients up here.
Let me know; it only takes me 10 minutes to get to that area... ;)
