Is the Cruise Control suppose to suck??

Why is it when I set my cruise control, it goes 3-5 mph above or below where I want it, but never where I want it regardless of going uphill, downhill or even on flat roads.....This is probably the most crappy cruise control I have come across in years.....

Anyone else notice this?
Anyone have any ideas how to fix it??

When I had my Protege ES, the cruise worked really well. It stayed within 1-2MPH of the speed I set it at. Then again I had a manual transmission....not sure what you have, but a lot of people say the automatics aren't as accurate.

Sport-Matic here and not a problem with the CC staying on what it was set at.
Course I generally speed slightly 2-3 above my attended speed, left off the throttle so the RPMs drop down, then set it. It will normally drop down to where I want and stay there.

Were I you, I'd have the dealer check it if it's under warranty, otherwise +/- 2-3 MPH isn't a big deal especially on hills, should be pretty close on the flats.

i notice that when i get to my cruising speed and set "cruise" it always drops 1-3 mph?? i just "bump it up" with the accelerate button, and i'm fine.

my CC works fine, and I just drove from NJ to Atlanta and back. Stays dead on where I set it. Even on hills it never varied more than 1-2 mph, and that was mostly after the apex.

Agreed, sportmatic transmission with cruise set at 70mph and no problems or complaints.

Wow... My car has cruise control? *looks* Oh, yeah! *dusts it off* Wonder what it does? Hehee. I've used it once, to be honest, and it worked fine. I've got a 5 speed, as well. Never shifted more than two miles an hour off.

Personally, wouldn't know if it worked or not. I think I've used CC twice since I began driving in 1975. I don't get the attraction and don't know why it's a standard feature.

I have a 2002 with a manual transmission. My cc works fine, but I don't like how it shuts off if your speed drops below your cruise setting by 10 mph.

Most of you probably don't have to worry much about that, but living and traveling so high above sea level, it's a real issue for me. I think the mathematical calculation for altitude adjustment is a 2 % loss in power for every 1,000 feet you increase in elevation. That would put me with less than 120 hp at the crank, and mid-90's at the wheels. With torque also dropping, that makes quite a difference when you're trying to drive a loaded car over a mountain pass at 80 mph.

So my cc works fine, I just don't like the auto shut-off feature.

mine werks great, it makes my monthly drive up to berkeley a lot better. its on 90% of the drive.

i have the initial "dip" though, and its a slight annoyance, but it keeps speed really well, even going over the mountains and down the mountains.

Yea I get the initial 1-2 mph dip too, then it stays pretty much right on. Maybe +/- 1 mph.

I checked it again on the way to work this morning and yep, it is wandering anywhere from 2-5 mph on flat roads, hills up or down....So....

My dealer says...."Mazda says that anywhere up to 5mph above or below where you set it is considered normal"...

I say that is crap!! Can we say "future speeding ticket"????

Anyone got any ideas why mine sucks and others are spot on!!

I wouldn't count on cruise control getting you out of a speeding ticket even if it stayed spot on the setting. Police radar isn't always exactly calibrated and I know several people who have argued "But my cruise control was set at 69 officer" and the cops said Tough s*** here's your ticket.

I never heard of anyone getting out of a ticket using a cruise control excuse, so if that's your concern about the varying speeds on your CC, I wouldn't consider that a problem.
