invisible cellphone holder :-)

You could also freak out passengers by using it as a cup holder for a metal coffee mug.

I'd prolly knock it off with my mad manu-matic shifting skills. I just use the lil bin to the left of the steering wheel, perfect height... and a Jabra bluetooth speakerphone.

Skyhawk,

how did you do your installation? With glue? Or was the magnet sticky on one side? Cause I have the same problem! I would like my GPS to hang at the same place as yours, but since the wire is not flush with the case, I was wondering how I could get the extra spacing needed... Where did you get these magnets? And I presume that GPS are like Cell phones? Meaning that they are not affected by magnets? Am I correct?

I used double sided tape to mount the first layer of magnet. Some 3M brand i got from walmart. Mounted it in summer. so far winter came and went and the double sided tape held on.

The magnets I got from inside defective hard drives. But there are similar strength magnets in the stores. You can place layers of magnets to maintain the gap between the 'wall' and to 'angle' the gps screen towards you. Magnets should not affect operation of the gps.

the reason i have chosen this area is that i can see the phones display to know who is calling me. plus i can leave it there for charging.

Skyhawk,

Thanks for the tip! I stopped in a hardware store yesterday night. Picked up 2 sided tape, round magnets, a pot of epoxy glue and that was it!

The epoxy glue is simply to have the layer of magnets to stick together! not to put on the dash.

It almost worked, but my problem this morning, was that my 2 sided tape did not make it through the night... A bit too cold still... I'll wait until this weekend and do it during the day.

Eventhough yesterday evening was nice, the temp went down to -11 during the night... So this morning, tape was not sticking anymore...

I had the same problem with cold surface not allowing mounting tape
to stick. Waited for warmer temp, allowed the tape to stick and left it without load overnight.

I have 2 locations for my gps. lots of possibilities with these magnet mounting
ideas. The gps already has bluetooth so my cell stays in the my pocket.
gps remote control also comes handy.

As I said, I'll wait until this weekend, hoping that the weather will be warmer... And since I don't want to see the double sided tape, I just hope that the thin part sticking on the dash, will be enough to hold my GPS... Mine is a Magellan 1430 with a 4" x 3" screen view... its kinda large!

what stoe can i get this magnet? i really want to do this mod for my gps and my cell phone. I just need to know where to get everything.

TIA.

Since I posted on Mar 20, I still have problems trying to get the 2 way tape to stay... unbelievable!!!

Temperature is now warm and it doesn't seem to stick well.... contraire, the 2 way tape, when the vehicle is parked for a few hours, melts and doesn't stick anymore...

I even went to Home Depot to by the "premium 2 way tape", normaly made for carpet... But still... It doesn't stay at all... It will be all right for a few days, but as soon as sun begins to heat the car a bit, I'm done....

Anybody would have any idea? I'd like it to stand at the same place as Skyhawk...

Thanks guys!

Jasma.

are you trying to tape them on the lower radio cover? the black one under ther radio unit itself? you can remove this. you need to disassemble the center console and push the cover from inside out. you can then use a hot glue gun to glue the magnets into that cover. this way they will be invisible afterwards. so pretty much the same way i glued the magnet under the shifter konsole.

on the first picture you see that glue gun on the right. dont know the english name for it but i think you can see what i mean.

Thanks Nehvada.

The only thing, is that the wires connecting to the GPS are not "flush" with the back of the GPS... Which means that it requires a gap between the console and the gps.. Hard to explain... I should take pictures!

So, if I put magnets behind the lower radio cover, the GPS will not be flush, since the wires are making about 1/8" of a gap....

I'll take pictures to explain it! But if you understand... And have another idea...

What would help, is to find a wire that is flat... And not with a 90 degree angle. Then I could easely put the magnets in the back and only 2 little metal plates in the back of the GPS... I don't know if we can find this type of wire... With a cigarette lighter connexion on the other hand...

in understand what you mean.

what wire is that? for power or external gps antenna?

on my gps the power wire plugs into the underside of the gps unit. i never felt the need for an extra gps antenna, allways good reception. maybe you just dont need it?

It maybe be the type of mounting tape. And the problem of small magnets
having too small surface area for the mounting tape to support the load.

Another option is to use a piece of metal ruler, between the plastic surface and the magnets. Here's my 2nd gps location on the mazda5.

Its still a prototype. I'm still to make the setup look pretty. maybe color
the metal piece.

The photos show a tomtom One. But the magnets can support the heavier
tomtom 930.
