Interior Air Vents questions

Mine is a 2003 P5. Near as I can tell, when you switch the air to either "floor only" or either one of the "defrost" settings (on the windshield), the air compressor kicks on, regardless of whether the a/c button is in. That's kind of a drag, eh? I'd rather have it where I could punch on the compressor via the a/c switch if I think I need it.

Does that mean that in the winter if I just want to blow hot air, it is still kicking on the compressor even though I've got the temp setting on the hot side? (eyeballs)

Thanks for any insight,

-Chuck

Yea, the compressor runs anytime the air is on floor only, or if the defog is on. It sucks but you can change it with the "how-to" mentioned in the last reply. You'll also notice that it switches to outside air...and you can't change it.

That's why I usually run mine on the dash/floor vent. No A/C...I only use the defrogger when the window's fogged up...that's what it's for.

It will still come on when on the floor settings too. I did the how to on disabeling this stupid feature and it took like 20 min. A definate must do for everyone.

Excellent -- this is great info. Thanks to all!

the reason it comes on with the defroster is because the a/c system removes moisture from the air, thus taking the fog away from windows a lot faster.

it makes sense if you ask me. so you loose 1mpg...its not like we're race machines anyways.

Yeah, but I'd rather have the flexibility. I'm capable of turning on/off the A/C button when appropriate, and that way I can operate the car more efficiently. I think it is similar to why people would choose standard transmission over automatic.

i think stark is referring to when he doesnt have the blower set to a number ie 1,2,3,4. hence if the blower is on "0" the compressor wont be on. at least it shouldnt be on.

While I agree with you 100%, I didn't buy a standard for efficency. (drive)

i could never figure out why people refer to a 5spd as a standard. I mean i know why, but it just doesnt make sense to do that.
