Intake Question?

OK I spent two hours searching this site this morning and want to know if taking the silencer pieces (2) off of the airbox is cool. I just left the airbox alone. it sounds better and I am ordering an Injen CAI in a few weeks and want to know if NO DAMAGE will occur from driving around with those stupid plastic pieces by radiator off?

Thanks

No problems here

I took those off when I got back from picking up the car. Sounds much better, no problems.

Re: Intake Question

As a temporary mod until you get your Injen, you certainly won't do any damage. However, you will probably experience a loss in performance from removing these two pieces. By removing the snorkel over the radiator you will increase the intake air temperature which will reduce horsepower output to some extent.

The piece that hangs down below the airbox acts as a Helmholtz resonator that functions to increase and maintain low speed torque. The net result is that you will probably find some loss in power and acceleration over the stock set-up.

when you replace stock airbox with a short air intake there is no Helmholtz resonator, So why would that not effect low end torque as well? Just curious, cause when I removed mine it seemed to be faster and I could actually spin the tires while driving, when I had the 2 plastic pieces I could not?

Please advise?

I can't exactly account for your results but I'll try to give an explanation of what might be happening. On my car, I have run with both a modified OEM system and an AEM Short Ram intake. The modified OEM maintains the Helmholtz resonator. With the AEM, I clearly had better top end response and the engine seemed to rev up more freely and quickly. however, it was also more sluggish off the line and did not rev up as quickly in the low rpm range. For everyday driveability, flexibility and low speed punch, I preferred the OEM to the SRI.

In your case, removal of the inlet tract before the air box may make your system behave more like an AEM or Injen by removing some of the restriction to air flow but I would think this would only benefit the top end. The fact that you can spin your tires now suggests this. I'm surprised you haven't noticed a reduction in low end torque, however, and I frankly can't account for that.

hmmm thanks, I guess I will drive it for a few weeks and then re-install the 2 pieces back on it and then see if I can feel a difference. I was mainly worried I could suck up water or something else to damage my car, I know it has the flat air filter but I dunno if water would seep right though it or not.

thats what I thought Devil, I mean I dont like the 3 inch wide open whole in the airbox with no screen or nothing but I figure the air cleaner will catch anything.
