Intake and Exhaust Cams

alec172, i came up with those specs from speaking to a specialist cam grinder here in brisbane where i live. has the reputation of being in the best in australia and has been doing grinding for 50 years or something, so he knows his sh!t. the cam specs are actually a grind for a street/strip miata (we call them mx-5's here) engine and they work very well in both n/a and turbo trim.

what you should probably do like you said, is take the valve cover off adn have a little look around. that's how i learnt about cars - i taught myself. take things off, have a look, put them back. so see if you can take one cam out and put it back. if you can do that, you can do the new intake cams.

The stock intake cam has a different duration then the exhaust cam. I am trying to find the spec sheet.

Thats why protege5 and es protege get more of a gain then the mp3. MP3 had a cam that came close to the j spec cam.

Also add cam gears then you can move the rpm band around.

Where'd you get that info? I always thought the cams were the same between the Mp3 and the p5...

twilight - I notice you increased the lift on your cams...how does the difference feel? What's the highest lift our stock heads/springs, etc can properly support?

ALL - I'd think long and hard before I used my old intake cam for an exhaust cam. And even if you did, you'd really want to consider a cam gear. I'm no cam expert, but it sounds a little scary to me.

im not getting mintblue...i was responding to a reply by saying i was gonna take off the valve cover and poke around and try to learn how to install the cams...i was referring to waiting for my paint from paintscratch.com

good info here. hows the tripoint adjustable cams for the person who has it? have you tried any settings besides stock? sorry saw it in somones sig. tripoint makes some high quality stuff for mazdas.

also, is the fs-ze exhaust cam the same as ours? everyone wants the intake one but not the exhaust one so they are probably the same right?

kooldino, i have put the cams in yet, i'm getting them ground shortly and will be putting those in when i get the headwork done i plan on doing.

all, all of the cams for intake and exhaust are basically the same, just different duration and lift. intake will work on exhaust and exhaust will work in on intake...but you can be 100% sure that they will work, no problems what so ever.

further to the above, the stock valve springs couldnt handle much more than 0.355" (which i'm going for). if you're going any more than that, get new stronger valve springs
