We finally got the chance to pack up the speed3 with a full load of: 2 kids, mom n dad, a kayak on the Yakima roof rack, and enough junk in the trunk to make the stock wheel well gap go from this:

People, boat, and goods all included, I'm estimating 700-800 lbs. I got the Q-towers and clips for the rack mounts, as well as the fairing. I fabbed my own bars; seriously Yakima, $55 for a couple pcs of 1" pipe? Come on! Anyway, we loaded up and took off for the lakehouse, about a 200 mile drive.

I was a bit cautious as this was my first time with the boat on this car, so I kept it between 65 and 70, but had the a/c on most of the time. Keep in mind, my average mpg since new is 23.54mpg (yeah, I keep a spreadsheet for this stuff) with a 30% city, 70% highway commute. On the ride to the lakehouse, we burned over half a tank at 26.16 mpg - no kidding. I was quite shocked. The killer was that on the way back, after having unloaded most of the crap we brought with us, as well as leaving the kayak at the house, we got a personal best 29.19mpg with the cruise at 72 and the a/c on the whole way. BTW, these numbers did not come from the inaccurate dash display (which said we got 29.7 on the way there and 28.5 on the way back). That's the best road trip mileage I've ever gotten, and that was with the roof rack on. Why bother taking it off the car, eh? :)

The kayak actually act like a ultra-sharp nuclear-powered blade and it cuts the wind in front of you in half that's why you got better gas mileage.

I'm going to go ahead and say it was because you were keeping your speed down. If cautious is 65-70 I'm going to assume your normal it around 80. IIRC the general statement is an engine's "sweet spot" for most efficient fuel consumption/output is around 60MPG.

I wish I got 60MPG (bang)

To the OP: You live in Aurora? So do I! Where in Aurora?

Just about as east as you can get in A-town: about halfway inbetween Ogden and 59 off 75th. I have seen a red 'speed around the Arboretum on 88 a couple times, but that's it.

Back on topic, we've similarly loaded up the APR'd 2.0T DSG Jetta for the trip to the lakehouse today. We'll see what it will do. Historically, there's been a more considerable difference in MPG than the minor difference in acceleration would seem to indicate. Which of course makes me wonder if a Cobb Accessport would return better mileage and perf. too. It would sure make for a good pitch to the wife, "But honey, I need this performance chip! It will help get better mileage!" ;)

Pffft, like I'd tell her anyway...

I'm right around there too! I'm off of McCoy in the Oakhurst subs. I think I might have seen your car before, maybe, on McCoy once.

Probably has to do with the fact that you set your cruise control at 65 for the whole trip and never had to change speeds.
Your fairing probably did some good as well.

Could be, I go that way sometimes taking the boy to daycare. Nothing too distinguishing about my car, other than the Illinois legal tint (no fronts) with a strip on the windshield, and the occaisional anti-liberal magnetic bumper sticker on the hatch.
