I'm getting a new PC!

not that long, just took awhile to wait for prices on parts and stuff and shipping. he read up a lot on overclocking and stuff so he was able to pump out a lot of power for cheaper.

build your own! its so much more satisfying :p

im gonna start building mine soon...possible water cooling? :D

I f he spend more then 15 hours on it I sure as hell wouldn't best that and I could make the difference in OT in that time.

s***, the actual building part of it takes me less than an hour, especially if the board is ready to go. Computers (like cars) are mass assembled, and the parts are built to be put together quickly. In fact, I think a computer is about 10,000 times easier to work on than a car.
I wish I was good enough to compare effectively, and know what cutting edge is. I can build a system from scratch, but I dont know what brands are better than what.

It's funny this thread came up. My PC died two days ago (20th). Now I'm considering building a custom box. My programming friend will do it for me if I "provide" him with 2 flat screens.

wow! flat screens!!! i remember reading about some graphics card that supports using like three monitors...pretty cool stuff! they have those at my school in the business college. bastards!!!

Whats the difference between a flat screen and an LCD to me they are one and the same yet you ragged on LCD screens and seem to like flat?

Either way I can always use my 38" data monitor instead, or should I say either one of them. Ofcoarse there are alway those projectors.:p

hey thanks for having interest in my avatar.
it is picture of my girlfriend. a lot of ppl asked me about my avatar.
sorry enry~! i let you down :D

not to worry. you should post some pics of her in the hot girl thread, though.

A friend of mine is a VERY big computer buff. Upgrades every 2 months, just for fun. So I brought up the issue: "What do you think about Dell?"

His answer nails it..

"Do you like what dell offers - if the answer is YES - then go for it, if NOT then ...."

I must agree! :)

Whoops...I meant Micron. Sorry.
You are forgiven...lol
Yeah, they're not bad, but at home i have a REAL monitor.

It's the black one on the right. 21" of madness....and the highest spec you've ever seen. ;)
You know it's funny you mentioned that--I was just at my RX-7 girlfriend's house and she showed me her 21" monitor. The picture was as beautiful as real life! I asked her if it was a Trinitron and she said it was a Hitachi! NIIIIIIIIICE...

The difference is between digital and LCD analog. Digitals are MUCH clearer and have wider viewing angles. The LCD analogs are usually cheaper cuz they don't require the more advanced graphic cards.

If you do get a digital FP, do NOT forget to get a graphics card with DVI. Other wise the image will looks like s*** and money will have been wasted.

Thanks for the info?
The video card i got has a dvi out.
I habe no idea what the 15" is. Probably regular old analoge. But I doubt the video card is good enough to matter that much on the display. Plus like I said I will probably just sell the display or keep it in the box until I have to go back to a tiny dorm room.

How far along is DVI in the consumer market. My only knowledge is of the commercail market? It will be interesting to see what will become the standard now that they have 6 wire, cat 5 video, or 5e or cat 6 plus DVI.

How the hell did a simple thread about me getting a new computer get to be 4 pages. :wtf:

Oh thats right, people couldn't just say "cool, hope you like it". Instead all I get is "You could have built it for less and I get it cheaper"

I have one response.
I have a turbo and you don't.
:p

hehe sorry. we're just offering our suggestions. the new dells are cool no doubt about it. if you like it super! and if it does everything that you hoped that it would do then super-di-duper! :p

if you won't except that apology. you can rag on the computer im gonna start building all you want. deal? :D

- No just lack of trust for those that say they can build them.
Well, have them prove it by showing you PCs that they HAVE built.
- If your better and cheaper then dell why didn't you just build the ones for your office. I think your office has the same opinion i do.
Well...for starters we'd have to buy a copy of windows, office, etc etc for each PC that comes in...
Secondly, I work for the government, so things don't work like that. For example, they're TRYING to waste money because it's the end of the fiscal year, and if they have leftover $, then they won't get as much funded to them next year. There are a lot of reasons. However, I have done upgrades on all of the computers we have as well, and I'm well trusted by the people I work with. If it was a viable option for me to build a dozen PCs, they probably wouldn't be against it.
- I don't know much about computer at all and thats exactly the way I want to keep it too.

That seems foolish to me.
On top of that, systems that I build are much faster and much more upgradeable than a prebuilt. Oh, and prebuilts come with tons of crappy softare pre-installed. Not so much Dells, but Compaq, etc are really pretty bad with it.
-deleting is always an option
[/B][/QUOTE]
I assume you mean "uninstalling?"
Okay, but
1-It's a PITA
and
2-It's not always an option. A lot of BS comes integrated in systems and isn't removable unless you REALLY REALLY know wtf you're doing. In which case you probably wouldn't be buying a pre built.
I however, don't think you should build one yourself unless you have a good understanding of PC's. However, if you have a friend who REALLY knows his stuff, and can build a rock solid PC for ya, then do it up. There's things that you can do with a home grown PC that you can't do with a Dell, dude. Plus, when you buy from a vendor like Dell, you're really limited to hardware choices. There are usually some very good hardware options that you'll never get, since Dell (for example) does not have a contract with that specific vendor.
- If I can watch the bang bus and play RPGs thats all I need.
Yeah, FOR NOW. In a year, playing an RPG at decent settings will require a lot more HP. And video codecs are taking more and more CPU too.
Oh yeah, and just as an ex of tweakablility of a home grown PC...the PC I built in July (Legobox) is a measly 1.2Ghz Duron, but will murder the 2.6Ghz Dell PC's we have at work in many benchmarks. More for less, man. More for less.

-P4's lick my nuts. If I had the $1900 i would have gotten the Power Mac

Uhh...not sure if you're aware...but a 2.8Ghz P4 is the fastest desktop CPU out now. And if they lick your nuts, then WHY ARE YOU BUYING ONE?

Besides, I doubt most RPGs you have will run on a Mac.

15 HOURS?!! WTF?

I can put the box together in just over 15 mins...

And installing software and everything...Hell...maybe 3 hours grand total, and fairly well tweaked.

Yeah, that would be the matrox panhelia (sp?). The card is an OK performer, but it's WAAAY overpriced. Not worth it AT ALL IMO.

I've seen some NIIIIICE projectors before. $5K+ ones. Pretty damn good.

I honestly don't feel like trying to explain the downsides of LCDs in text...but I'll touch on a few.

1-A phenomenon called "ghosting". Basically the screen will display things that aren't there.

2-Dot pitch. The BEST LCDs that you can find easily have around a .26 dot pitch, but 95% of them have a .28 or higher (higher=worse). Your AVERAGE tube has a .26, and higher ones like mine are even lower than that. I've never seen a lower dot pitch that the one on my monitor (if you actually care, look up the link i posted on an earlier post in this thread). Basically "dot pitch" refers to the distance between the pixels. The closer they are (ie lower number), the better. A difference of .02 is pretty noticeable, especially at higher resolutions.

3-Resolutions. LCD's ONLY look "good" at ONE resolutions. The word "good" was in quotes because they never really look "good", but I'm using "good" as a relative term here. So basically, if you change the resolution from the res it was designed to run at, it will look like crap. Big time. And since it seems like you're a gamer (you said you played RPGs), you're probably gonna wanna run different games at different resolutions (typically, you want to run the highest playable resolution). I think by now you already see the problem...

Eh, I dunno about "nailing" the question...sounds more like he's avoiding it. You could replace the word "Dell" with anything and it would still work.

"What do you think about a steaming pile of crap?"

"Do you like waht a steaming pile of crap offers - if the answer is YES - then go for it, if NOT, then ...."

See what I mean? Lame answer. Dells have their strong points, but they're very overrated. If I HAD to buy a premade, it'd probably be a Micron.

In my line of work I have to learn about something when I have to fix it. PC's are just one more thing I would rather be able to forget are a complex system, I need less stress in my life not more.

Exactly if you have to buy windows and all the sofetware the savings you had by building are all but wasted. I doubt you can build a PC to those specs with everything and all the same software wiht legal liscenses for $600, if you can quite your job and start a buisness.

You may be able to build PCs in a few hours, including looking up and ording parts and shopping for the best deals and loading software, I doubt it. If you can once again start your own buisness. ALso Remember I know very little and Have no intentions of spending the time to learn or keep up with technologies. I enough to fallow. Not to mention reading about CPUs would cause me to fall into a coma in an hour.

Great another person that works for the Governement that spends half the day on the internet. Please tell me your works not that critical to others.:D
