Idling Question

Ok, I just had my fuel pump replaced with a MSP fuel pump...they look the same. The car still wouldn't start, and I was told the fuel pump relay was bad. Now since that has been repaired ti idles very low, with a kinda "lumpy" sound to it. What do ya'll think the problem is?

Idles lumpy - but does it drive okay?

Did oyu replace the sock filter when you did the pump?

Was it a new pump? Or jkyd?

I am sorry you swapped a pump then find out it was just a relay...

Yeah, was kinda pissed about that. The car sat at my in-laws for almost a month because of that...damn!! The fuel pump was used-it was out of a heavily modded MSP. It idles soo low my automatic starter won't even work...I gotta give it some gas or the motor won't turn over (like it has a carbuerator on it). I did use the same sock filter...the person I bought the fuel filter from only send the fuel filter. But once I get it past 2K rpm it's fine.

sounds like it's not getting enough gas then..so too much air and the engine does not want to run...uhh...did'nt you alrdy relace the injectors? Did you check for vac leaks too? How much have you driven it? did you leave it on for a while to let the ecu re-learn itself? Or try unplugging battery and trying to get the car to re-re teach itself. most my idles issues have been due to vac leaks...but you never know..

I'll try unplugging the battery...now it will idle just fine, then idle low. For the past 20 minutes it's been perfect. I'll unplug the battery and let you know what happens.

Unplugged the battery...checked all vac lines...all clear. I'm starting to think it's the fuel pump...the kinda new fuel pump.

I work at a shop and would never recommend using a used pump. even if my customer was going to pay me extra I still wouldnt, because I dont care how supposedly "new" the used pump is, it may be crap and that is why you ended up with it.

Where exactly is the fuel pump relay? Now it seems if it idles low and I drive for at least a 10 minute stretch without stopping it idles great, and it'll run great for around 30 minutes. But then it would started idling low again...maybe instead of replacing it the relay the tech just tried to repair it.

Another question...if it idles low, I'll hit the gas hard and bring it up to about 5-6k, then it idles great again. WTF?!?!?!?!?!?

my idle has been crazy for months now..I know it's becasue my egr valve is screwed up though , but it has all the same symptons as yours, but in your case that does'nt seem to be the problem...maybe if you fuel pump is being used heavily , it will work properly but as the idle goes lower and the gas is less used, the pump idle mode seems to mess up and come on and off, providing improper amounts of gas causing you engine to beg for more....

EXACTLY!!! That's what it feels/sounds like. I just parked it again and at low rpms it seems like the motor isn't getting enough gas, but 2k on up it's fine. But most of the time it idles good, then sometimes it idles at about 200rpm...wierd.

Well, I know after the fuel pump was changed, it still idled like crap. then after driving it for about an hour, it bogged down and died...again. When I got it towed to a shop they said they fixed the fuel pump relay and it didn't cut off after that. I didn't even know what the fuel pump relay was!!
