idle/EGR question...

I posted this on the "how to EGR" thread, but that's old I'm not sure anyone would respond on it.... so here it is...

in regards to rought idle and EGR cleaning, in "how to" section it's referenced to manuals/stickshifts....

can this be an issue(and fix) on Automatics as well?

I recently bought a used 2002 MP5 with 124k, and it seems to idle in the 300-400 range, while at stoplights in D.

it's not too rough, but there' s little "gurgle" and shake every now and again, and once in a while it drifts from 300-400 up to 600, and it always feels "smoother" when at 600.

Ive pulled and cleaned the MAF(resest ECU), and just run seafoam through the brake-boost vacuum line. (currently, no change yet but nothing got worse)

I have some new plugs to drop in now (going to try some G-POWER BKR5EGP 7090's) and thought maybe cleaning the EGR may help as well....

thoughts?

Clean it! You're on the right track, I guess.
My auto idles in D at 650-700rpm. The manual says it should be between 650 and 750 when engine is warm and in D, for autos. Also, my rpm gauge shows a bit higher RPMs than what it really is, about +50 than it should.
300-400 is way low.

This is the classic case of misreading the tachometer (i've explained this so many times it's not funny). Our tachometers do not start at 0 - they start at 500. So if you say 300-400, it's more like 800ish, which is a little high, but unless the car is completely warmed up, it will idle high for a little while.

Also, EGR cleaning will help autos and manuals alike - just be sure to remove the battery first. It makes it a lot easier to get at the EGR valve!

We need a sticky or something explaining how our tachometers are numbered. Not bashing on the OP or anything, but this is a very common confusion among people on here.

I can't currently find a pic of the dash but I'm pretty sure the 500rpm mark is thicker.
Not so sure, but under the 500 mark there may be like 2-3 more thin marks really close together. Better to count down from 1000 anyway :)
I compared the dash tach with the reading off OBDII and came up with the posted diff.
I may have other problems but bad idle rpm is not one of them (yet..)

Edit: Damn, PWNed cause slavrez quoted me and was too lasy to read the whole post. Ignore...
