Tonight I decided to tackle the issue with my MZ6 emergency brake. Started fabbing up some brackets, I shuold be finishing them up tomorrow. Pictures to come.

I've been working 12hr days 5/6 days a week for the past couple of months and its really eating into my P5 time. The weekend before last I tried to take and have the halfshaft welded up, but the guy couldn't weld cast metal so that didn't work out too well. I'm still looking into another shaft or potentially another trans, not really sure why I'm having all this trouble with a part that appears to be a non-issue for the rest of you. (womp-womp)

At this point, I'm thinking it has to do with the trans. Maybe the bellhousing is different on the MX-3? It bolted up fine to my block, but the positioning of the half-shaft seems off, and by off I mean too close and too high, it was the same with both shafts that I tried. So I see to options, either grab a new trans and half-shaft, or grab a half-shaft out of a MX-3.

I saw that Evan got his motor in and has it running, I feel so behind lol. Hopefully that all changes soon.

i forgot you were using a mx3 trans. i did a quick search on car-part.com and it doesnt look like there is a junkyard within about 300 miles with a half shaft. but theres a junkyard with a transmission from a 1994 probe about 18 miles away. iit looks like it is either take a road trip and spend less money or spend more money and not have to travel far. whatever you do i am sure you will figure something out.

and you feel behind? i started before evan.

I think I just toally lucked out with my half shaft and kinda why I went with a JDM MX-6 tranny. My fingers were crossed it would bolt up.

I'm going to Pull-a-Part tomorrow hunting for parts with my friend and I think they have a few PGT's. Do you want me to look for a half shaft for you? I can ship it to you Wednesday for cheap. Just let me know what year and if it should be a 2 or 3 bolt.

Yea but I started before the both of ya!

I've had both the 3 bolt (via 93 Probe GT) and the 2 bolt (a la 98 Milly), neither of which bolted up, though they both fit the same way, on center, but too high; I even photographed the block of the milly to ensure that my block wasn't different.

Maybe I just need to grab a new trans and move on, after reading the following [LINK] it would appear that the MX-3 and Probe GT share the same gearset, while the MX-6 has the longer final drive (making each of it's gears longer). So in essence, I could grab a Probe GT trans and move on; I'd imagine that the 626 trans is the same as the MX-6 and thus not so "zoom-zoom". Would be interesting if that fixes the whole deal...and sad at the same time. Here's what I found (specifically) from that page:

MX-3 (K8) & Probe GT (KLDE) / G(5)M-R

Gear Ratios (Input:Output)
1st 3.307:1
2nd 1.833:1
3rd 1.310:1
4th 1.030:1
5th 0.795:1
Final Drive 4.388:1

Short acceleration gears. There is some controversy over some of the later model PGT's getting a 4.105 FD. Ford is retarded and can't tell me the ratios, so I guess you'll have to keep pulling them apart and counting teeth. For now, if I were you, I'd assume they all have the 4.388 FD. Its much more likely that previous owners swapped in the MX-6 trans for the longer gears, than Ford put them in there OEM without someone finding that out for sure.


MX-6 (KL-DE) & 626 (KL-DE) / G(5)M-R

Gear Ratios (Input:Output)
1st 3.307:1
2nd 1.833:1
3rd 1.310:1
4th 1.030:1
5th 0.795:1
Final Drive 4.105:1

Same as the MX-3 GS (K8) transmission, just longer gears from the FD ratio.

also technically if you started when you started this thread then i started before you. because i started doing research when i first joined in january of 2010 and i picked up the engine in febuary of 2010 but i told my mom i would start wrenching til school was out for the summer. so by the time i actually started wrenching you had already started with yours. but either way we are both behind and im not liking it lol

the only thing with the PGT trans is that you cant use a MSP lsd unless u switch ring gear, and Also, highway driving will be a bit higher rpm, I thought about that route too, just a little food for thought.

EDIT: I'm a liar and had my FD's mixed up, the 626 box is the same as the MX-6 aside from the shorter 5th gear. The earlier (~94+) gearboxes looked to be identical to the MX-6 gearboxes.


After a little more digging, I found a sweet gearbox calculator and after much more research, the 626 gears look promising:

First: 3.307
Second: 1.833
Third: 1.310
Fourth: 1.030
Fifth 0.837
Final Drive: 4.105

This means that you could have the PGT/MX-3 1st-4th with a taller 5th gear to get the bestest mpg's (and I assume still run the MSP LSD). In other words, I would get the fuel efficiancy of the MX-6 trans without making all of the lower gears taller. This seems like the way to go, but I'm seeing if they changed between years, the above was taken from a 2002 Mazda 626 LX-V6/ES-V6.

I had it listed for 6-7k and had a lot of tire kicking, some insults, and a bunch of my time wasted. Technically its still for sale if someone has cash and wants to buy it I'll sell it, but I took down all the FS adds and I'm driving it. I really like the car - its just about right, but I really want a convertible and I could use a bigger truck. I posted this in another thread, but I want a classic brit with a wankel. There's a TR4 locally that would be perfect, it needs a new drivetrain, but the body and chassis are straight. I'd shoot for something like this when done (except no hard top, I'll never understand a hard top...)
