I miss the speed! :(

Assuming there are no major repairs that end up not worth fixing but full replacement of vehicle, or worse yet and accident carrying no fault insurance resulting in the same ultimate replacement of the vehicle.
Wow man those sound like risks of vehicle ownership or something! An accident, you say? Why that could never happen in a new car.
I think the point is when you hear someone is downsizing their life due to personal issues, one would assume in this day and age it is bad. Financial/social/employment issues that buying a gas guzzler that will need serious work (even when new) is not the solution.
Assume away man, you're doing a real good job of assuming a lot of things! Wouldn't wanna stop you now.

How's it two steps back to (hypothetically) go from owing $20,000 on a new car to owing maybe $5,000 on a used car? Even if you roll in gas, insurance and expected maintenance, the cost of ownership over 2 or 3 years should be much, much lower.

As I said, it's all armchair quarterbackin'. From either standpoint. To me, it seems like two steps back. I see what you're saying about the lowered monthly car payment. All it takes is one sizable, non-warranty repair to set you on your ass again. The reduced gas mileage is somewhat offset by 87 octane.

I don't pretend to know this guy's business. I, wouldn't trade my mazdaspeed3 on a 1998 Ford Explorer to save money only to turn around and start dumping money into that. If my goal was to fix my current financial standings, I'd sell my MS3 for what I owed (or as much over that as possible) and buy an older Corolla, Echo, Yaris, Civic.....and so on.
Then again, that's just me.

First of all, dont go through there picking out negatives and only negatives as someones short comings, for that you are no better. I also wrote sincere gestures to his future success'.

And to continue arguing, Full coverage insurance on new car loans replace the vehicle or at least get you out of the loan. ASS-U-ME = assume

it is probably a good idea in the long run. he could go shoot a bunch of his enemys and then plead insanity. or maybe he will make more financial decisions and end up homeless. people will give him lots more money, driving the exdeplorable and all. or maybe----SHUT-UP-DUDE!! O.K. sorry.

I understand not knowing the mans circumstances and I do hope it works out for him. Thats why I asked why he chose the explorer and if conserving money is the aim, why the lift kit?

I guess some back story is needed. Either way I hope it works out for him.

how about you guys wait for him to clarify instead of going on a wild goose chase for nothing other than gunking up this thread....?

Ya know, the original poster has come, said his piece, and gone, and you guys are dumping all over him without knowing a thing about his story. I think this is enough, thank you.

I asked Rotus to unlock this thread for me for now. Thanks Rotus!

Now, I had to do this because I wasnt making the payments (234 a month (broke college student here)) and i had deals with my parents and I broke it :( So the MS3 had to go.

Now, I got the explorer for several reasons: big enough, idc about the MPG, and most importantly, 4WD. I will soon be living in Rochester full time so I need something to handle the harsh winter there and the MS3 BARELY made it out.

Hope this answers your questions. Feel free to ask more!
